I got a "job" and I'm not very happy

NOT TRUE!

I never got Mormons to vacuum my house
You must not have asked :) The Mormons that used to visit my house always made a point to ask if there were anything they could do to help or any assistance they could offer. I never took them up on it (although I know others who did), but they seemed pretty sincere. Actually, I thought they were pretty decent fellows, other than the whole "trying to convert me" thing.

Seems that in todays jobless market, more companies are going the unpaid intern route. All it does is get the employers free labor for the length of the "internship/tryout. So the bosses get free labor and then say hey sorry you don't work out. NEXT and another victim shows up.

As for having a job to get a job, true some employers are now saying the unemployed need not apply, somehow thats just wrong in todays economy, employers may miss out on good employees with that attitude. When I was hiring people I liked to have those who really needed a job, they tend to be grateful for work and were happy as hell to show up everyday for a job with bennies and half assed decent pay to start.
Don't know where we're headed but when the government socalled leaders say that unemployment bennies only encourge people to sit homw and collect a check has never been out of work. Maybe our elected officials need to be in the unemployment line. But they just turn around and become lobbyists and suck off the government tit anyway most of them never had a real job where you had to bust your butt each day,
my two cents
:smoweed:

Our gov (uk) are about to start a 'work program' where people will be forced to work for nothing or lose all benefits. Would be ok if it was community work or a local small business but it's going to be huge companies; supermarkets, financial institutions, McDonalds and the like.

There's supposed to be the chance of a job at the end of it but why would an employer take on a paid employee when you can get one free from the government? Seems to me they've swung from supposedly encouraging unemployment to actually encouraging slavery.

To the OP, do whatever you can to move out of your folks house (apart from growing in their house without permission) then start growing as much as you can. Growing for a living is a hell of a lot more secure than having a job these days.

What the "employer" is doing is not illegal. That's why he chooses to call it "volunteering" for 2 weeks. Another way around the labor laws is to call it an "internship." Employers have lots of loopholes to work with whereas the new employee has a choice to either take it or leave it. Shit, I was a production assistant for many years. You wanna talk about exploitation!

So true. Try it out, what do you have to lose? Time? You're not employed, so your time is worth fuck all right now. Take the shit job, than get something better down the road.

True story:

My uncle Jerry needed a job but it was the height of the Great Depression and none were available. One entity was still making money daily and that would be the newspaper business but again none were hiring. He wouldn't take 'no' for an answer though and formulated a clever plan.

Uncle Jerry chose the NY Daily News as the company he wanted to work for. He showed up in the mornings with his own broom and dust pan and swept the sidewalks and loading docks area clean every day, he kept to himself mostly but was asked occasionally to run a local errand for the dock foreman.

Eventually management was informed of what Jerry was doing, I believe it took a few weeks but they finally decided that he wasn't going away and that he had heart and fortitude so they hired him on. I don't recall what he did in his earliest days there beside the sweeping but he had his much needed job.

Uncle Jerry moved up the ladder into management and became the main trouble shooter in dealing with delinquent paying accounts. He retired in '89 or '90 and yet to this very day if I walk up to a newsstand manned by an old timer and tell them that I'm Jerry's nephew a smile breaks out across their face, he was beloved even by those he had to chase down for $$$ because he listened to their issues first with compassion and always left their business without arguing w/them or berating them.

My uncle left his home every single morning @ 5:30am, his first stop was his church (yes he was given a key) to pray for guidance in his life, he treated people (especially the deadbeats) with a dignity they probably couldn't even find in their own home. He rarely had issues w/the same vendor twice.

bozga, if you're going to potentially work somewhere for free then at least do it on your own terms not some rich fuckers.

the not being paid for 2 weeks isnt cool. if they are big douches, they may be slammed and just need someone for a few weeks. some bosses are just huge jerks

I'd steal everything that I could carry out of there.

I dunno why it matters if the guy has a castle.

I understand the... idea of living in a nice home, and making money.

and I understand the idea of living humbly... as some don't even have food

the fact that the guy has a lot of money I think shouldn't matter

why does it matter to you ?

if you don't want to volunteer, then don't

if you don't want the job, don't take it :)

I would weigh the pros and the cons of the situation

...im type 1 diabetic diagnosed 2 yrs ago...i think i could still crab tho......i def wanna....

it would be a fukin chore to handle my diabetes and crab tho.....but im down.

u dont have to be a US citz....but gotta have a visa (russians crab too)

money can be HUGE or go BROKE...but the current regs (IFQ)....don't get me going .........

... the best ppl for crabbing tho are ppl that have... no family, no job, no home, and nothing to lose.

ive seen every type of person that "falls" into the alaska fishing industry....not something most seek, but some seem to find....i sought it. :tiphat:
