For some reason i enjoyed more his "Senor Nice" book... i found it in a discount book shop for only two pounds, i bought as many as i could at the time and gifted to friends. The final chapter describes a DMT trip as vivid as one could possibly get to describe. For me and for this reason alone he is a great writer. I saw him last year in a stand-up show in London, middle of the show he tells the hosts to lock the doors and asks the public for the permission to light up a huge joint. Other people are lighting up, i'm like sober as fuck, and the guy declines requests to share his joint with a "Suport your local dealer" kind of smile. It was a very entertaining show, not having any weed on me i got hammered on tequilas and Guinnesses :)

sorry.. did'nt know am new here

You go type whatever way you feel comfortable..

Howard Marks was just a smuggler who was operating in time of lax customs and became famous by tiresomely recounting his exploits again and again and again with embellishments and bells and whistles on.
He may have been called Mr Nice but the man had no qualms about selling his hash to paramilitary organisations..

Take the book with a grain of salt :tiphat:

I've seen the old 1997 print of the book on sale at the moment. Theres a new print to go with the movie.

Watched his live show DVD. Loved it. A charismatic fellow with a great view on life.
Will pickup a copy of the book and join ya :)

Howard said it himself. He was not a great drug smuggler as he got caught. What he was good at, was capitalizing on his notoriety.

I don't know mate, the guy didn't strike me as a terrorist of any sort, i was under the impression that the IRA were very strict about drugs and his relationship with McCain was nordle importing only for the UK market. I might be a fool but i tend to believe him that he's no hardcore criminal, he may have been done bussiness with some but that doesn't make him evil in my book... And after serving 7 out of 25 years in a federal prison sentenced on some grotesque RICO law my sympathy goes towards him even more... :)

I liked the drugstorys book, its a colection of shortstorys, and some of them are very good. the senior nice book i didnt like as much as i liket the mr. nice book.
i read it as just a good book, and if Howard Marks wants to embelish and exsagurate he can, it still a good book.
i like him

i loved the book! havent seen the movie.
theres another book out from him called senor nice. but that one was crap. he just talks about his travels and gets fucked up on all kind of drugs. its pretty boring IMO.

the first one is really good though he tells his story how he built his drug empire, shipping tons of hash and weed around the world. really interesting story!

I have known Howard for quite some time and have always enjoyed our meetings/recreation together.....

Mr Marks is a fine story-teller and very humorous in person due to his constant wit, command of the English language and rich/warm Welsh accent.......and I am proud to call him a friend...

....He has lived the life of what some may construe as a 'Counter Culture Hero'.......and I salute him!

*The movie could have been better.......but would never compare to just reading the book Mr Nice.

Read the book Mr Nice and Drug Stories. Saw the movie and saw him live a couple of months ago. I thought his live act was shit. A couple of things were funny but he was really too out of his malet to perform that well. Maybe I should have been stoned watching him but I was driving so needs must.
