Question about 600 and 1000 watt set ups

I have a 600watt set up now and my local hydro shop is selling FULL 1k watt set up for only $200 and they are nice set ups

how much more will my electric bill jump?
Will it start looking sketchy on my electric bill?

also my electric bill went from $80 a month to $270 a month doesn't that seem a little high of a jump for two fans and a 600w sodium???

Thanks everyone!!!! :D :tiphat:

wow im stoned, i thought this was my post and i wondered where all the replys went lol.

imo ( im noob still) stick with the 600 so you can maintain that higher bill for a longer time, opposed to getting the 1k now and your bill jumping even more at a sooner time.

Im not sure I can give a correct answer for your first two questions. Alot of variables.
Location, Place of business, weather, all sorts of shit. Your bill, I know there is a formula around somewhere that can get you an idea of what your bill will be. I think...I swear I was reading some Brain breakin it down, made me dizzy.

Go to the Growroom design forum, and then go to subforum of Lighting. Bet you can dial it in better there.

yea your post made me think of this lol anyone have the link on hand for the formula? or experience/ case examples of them going from 600 to 1k?

as above.. they have a KW/hr formula somewhere there that will help you out. Wow a 3X jump??? Sounds like a lot to me. As above, work your way up with the bills. Not just one big jump ( i.e I timed mine with the seasonal change/demand) by the way hows your wiring??

I set up a closet in my place that i recently moved into (moved in w/ my GF) and were moving down south in a month and i would be starting a new set up down there. so was just thinking of buying ahead and waiting to set that up down there (plus im only a couple of weeks away from harvest here and will be taking a break after this) id start with the 600w down there mid summer and jump to the 1k once winter hit and most ppl are indoors using larger amounts of electricity

I found this in the Jorge Cervantes book

12 hour day 18hour day
kWh Day Month Day Month
$.05 $.60 $18 $.90 $27
$.06 $.72 $21.06 $1.08 $32.40
$.07 $.84 $25.20 $1.26 $37.80

but not sure what i do from there lol

An idea just came to me also:

If i veg under a 600w HPS at 24 hours of light and then when i switch to a 1000w HPS during 12/12 flowering, tech. id stay constant as far as my bill (a little less during flowering) but yet have a higher yield because of the increase in light correct?

Anyone have experience doing a set up like this???

The first thing that you need to know is how much you are paying for 1 kw hour. A kw hour is the usage of 1000 watts for an hour. I pay about 11 cents/kw hour. A 600 watt lamp is going to use 6/10 of a kw hour per hour. (Actually a bit more because the ballast uses some power to, but we will ignore that for now). If you multiply .11*.6 (kw/hr cost*kw used), you get .066, so for each hour of using 600 watts it will cost you 6.6 cents if your power cost is the same as mine. 18 hours * 6.6 cents = $1.19 per day. 24 hours * 6.6 cents = $1.58 per day.

Since your bill jumped far more than this would indicate, you are probably paying on a tiered rate schedule where your power costs go up after certain usage increments. This means that you may pay 11 cents/kw hour for the first 500 kw hours, then it jumps to 22 cents for the next 250 kw hours, and then up to 33 cents for the next time increment, or however the utility has decided to bone you.

You may also be paying more during certain times of the day, so you should check that out- it may be far cheaper if you just run during the nighttime. You need to familiarize yourself with your bill, and figure out what works best for you.

You also might want to consider if you will need extra air conditioning for the 1kw. That will also add to the electricity bill.

Find out what you're paying for power and when.

If you're running your light from 7pm to 7am, and your power cost varies with peak usage, you could be doubling your cost or more.

Example:

from 5 AM 'till 5 PM, your electricity might cost 7.5 cents /Kwh, but between 5 PM and 5 AM, it could cost 17 cents /Kwh.

Read your bill. You may be able to cut it in half.

(My 1000W costs about 37$ a month to run.)

Yeah in colder climates ( like ours) my unvented 1K (with fans blowing up on it with no glass) serves as my "heater" during the night ( on time) then I have to supplement heat during the day (off time). FWIW dont suck your heat out of your room in cold climates.

No problem man. If you want, PM me your municiplaity/region, and the rate plan code on your bill (RRO, LVC etc,), and I can tell you how your rates work.

wow your bill went up almost 200 bucks from a 600w light? that sounds almost impossible, my 400w light only raises my bill between 10 and 20 bucks a month, i had it off all summer for heat reasons, and used my ac very sparingly to cool my place, no discernible jump in power...nor was there a jump when i first started using my 400w hps. i don't know about your electric bill but mine shows my electricity usage month by month as a bar graph for a whole year so i can keep that in check. over the past year, the biggest change in my electricity came from switching out the 2 dozen 60-75w bulbs in my place for 13w cfl's... i saved more money doing that than my light adds!

Hahahahhah so the girlfriend forgot to pay the bill the past three months (before the grow was there, i take care of paying that bill now to avoid power cuts and unwanted guests lol) it went from 82 to 93 so we are all good and that seems about right...... could kill her right now hahahah
