Using caulk on painted drywall

Hey so I'm wondering if there is a specific compound I should use?

My plan is to use 2x4's to make a box frame around the window in a bedroom so I can use it to vent while looking normal.

I was thinking of using caulk between the wall and the 2x4 but I'd rather not damage my wall. I spent a lot of time painting it lol..

Is there a good compound to use? and is this stuff really toxic or can I just air the room out for several hours? A day or two?

Perhaps there is another solution that will seal it up real good and not damage?

Thanks! :tiphat:

caulking like bath and tile, and all purpose, isnt toxic once dried. Differnt brands may have a higher voc than others. caulk will peel the paint off your wall when you remove your vent, but will seal it up very well. other than caulk maybe some bottom plate foam, or sill foam, it comes in varying colors(dsnt matter which one), but wont seal up as good as caulk and mite let lite thru. you can find it a hd or lowes, probally in the lumber section. hope this helps.

Thanks coloradochem that does help! Maybe I can try cutting away at the caulk with a razor blade when I'm done? Slicing along the wall and try to repair/clean up the rest?

put some low density foam strip between the 2x4 and the wall. about $4 at home depot. works without sticking things together

Some of those rubberized/silicone caulks should peel right off of a painted surface when you're ready to clean up.

As long as it's not flat/latex paint, you should be OK...test a small strip near the window.

they even make it wider & thicker... just need to then use wood screws long enough to get to the wall studs. i personally used 1x2 rimmers to frame in a window... just easier to use, less wood.
