Breaking Bad

What is more interesting is what ELSE Gus is ... ? The pollo hermanos go to mexico in the late 80's to start over, and get into the drug game... Pinochet regime ends officially in 1990. Was Gus being hunted by the Pinochet regime?

The cartel boss in the poolside flashback said Gus was only alive because he knew who Gus was in Chile. Seems like they kept him alive because with that information they owned him, he was useful and so they made him the cartel's bitch.

So Gus created a scholarship that financed Gale's, and likely other candidates knowing Gus, education. Scholarship is in the name of the other pollo hermano (? need to confirm), initiated to one day replace his cook and the scholarship's namesake, who's education in Santiago was also paid for by Gus. Indeed the discussion of the chicken recipe to me shows parallels with Gale's vegan recipes/coffee brewing. No doubt Gale reminded Gus of someone special...

This pattern of patronage mirrors the Ford Foundation's activities in formenting ideology key to building the neofascist regimes of S. america... groups of economists in league with the military, corporate juntas. In Chile they were called the Chicago Boys... In Indonesia they were the Berkeley Mafia. Power syndicates of intellectuals, the CIA the likely cultivator.

Brilliant...

I read it a different way. I think possibly Gus was some sort of Pinochet cronie, maybe like internal police or intelligence. Something that would put him in contact with military (people like Mike) or other shadow type people (cartels/smugglers). Well connected enough to get a pass by the Mexican cartel boss, but not so much that he has to start over from scratch in Mexico and then the US. The Mexican cartel guy says to Gus, "The only reason you are still alive is because we know who you are. But understand, You aren't in Chile." That tells me that Gus was someone important enough in Chile to get a pass in Mexico. It's possible that he was a Pinochet guy that saw the writing on the wall and decided to get out of Chile while the getting out was good. As for his relationship with Max the young chemist from Santiago...Max said Gus rescued him from the slums and put him through school. Not sure that makes them gay unless Gus likes poor young boys..

Aren't they the best kind...

I think Jesse ends up saving Walts ass

aside note..I love Game of Thrones too. I still can't believe they killed Ned. Just when you think you know where they're going the script gets flipped...awesome!!!

Its cool to suggest stuff people might like if they like Breaking Bad.. JUST NOT WEEDS :)

I suggest The Wire and Deadwood... because they're fucking awesome and Breaking Bad is somewhere in between the two in terms of feel/setting/context.

I'd also like to add another suggestion... its a movie from 1994, and very underrated. Its called Fresh.

Beginning of Ebert's review of it is nice but I cut it short of the synopsis.. its better to watch it with a clean slate!

Its like if Bobby Fisher had to grow up in the ghetto... its just great. And oh hey, Giancarlo Esposito plays a drug dealer so theres that in common too lol.

ebert: Characters are never at a loss for words in the movies. They talk quickly, never hesitating or repeating themselves. Kids are especially articulate, like well-trained little word machines. Movies are getting to be more and more like television, where there's never a moment to spare.

"Fresh" isn't like that. Here's a movie filled with drama and excitement, unfolding a plot of brilliant complexity, in which the central character is solemn and silent, saying only what he has to say, revealing himself only strategically.

Fresh is a 12-year-old boy who lives in Brooklyn.

I guarantee you the creator of Breaking Bad has enjoyed Fresh in the past, and Breaking Bad is probably better for it.

Yeah they really are only teasers as to the episodes' contents but don't look if you want to remain completely fresh to the remaining episodes.
