Marijuana smokers are thinner, less likely to be obese than non-smokers, according to

So if you want to stay skinny, keep on tokin'

"A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that people who smoke marijuana are less likely to be obese than non-smokers.

Stoners may spend a lot of time on the couch and craving White Castle, but they apparently don't let their bodies go to pot.

People who smoke marijuana regularly are less likely to be obese than non-pot smokers, according to a new study by French researches.

"We found that cannabis users are less likely to be obese than non-users," Dr. Yann Le Strat, French psychiatrist and co-author of a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology told MSNBC. "We were so surprised, we thought we had [made] a mistake.”

Using data from two epidemiologic studies of U.S. adults, researchers found that between 22% to 25% of participants who didn’t smoke pot were obese.

But only between 14% and 17% of those people who admitted to taking a toke at least three times a week were overweight.

Le Strat said other factors, such as the stoners' level of physical activity or diets, could have contributed to the results, but his team tried to rule out those factors.

The researches were also quick to point out that sucking on a bong isn't the key to a tight tummy.

"The take-home message is certainly not 'smoke cannabis, it will help you lose weight,'" Le Strat said. "The possibility that cannabis is associated with a lower risk of obesity remains an interesting hypothesis, but certainly does not counterbalance its negative effects on health and mental health."

I bet marijuana smokers are less likely to be anorexic too.

I bet they are less likely to be addicted to gambling.

Because cannabis is HELPING people's mental health so they don't get all freaked and stressed out by the modern world, and in reaction overeat, or not eat, or shop, or gamble.... etc

lol total and utter bullshit.

your weight is related to physical activity vs calorie intake along with the most important part: metabolism.

my brother is 3 years younger then me. he eats fast food every day all day, probably averages 10,000 calories a day, no joke. doesn't do any physical activity at all, and the kid is in flawless shape, flat as a board.

I on the other hand battled weight for years and now that ive gotten it under control smoking does nothing but make me hungry 24/7. I have had to smoke LESS because it fucks up my diet / exercise if i do. I have to eat 1500 calories a day + workout 6days a week to keep it in control

what a total crock of bullshit, how can they rule out those factors?

caloric deficit = you lose weight
caloric surplus = you gain weight

the only role cannabis plays in that is that it might enhance or reduce your appetite, hence influencing your calorie intake.

When I'm sitting around bored, I smoke herb.

When my mom is sitting around bored, she goes into the kitchen and eats cookies, ice cream, candy, etc.

There are tons of obese people in the US. (pun intended.)

Some people eat to cope with stress. Some people smoke herb. Some people pound beers. Two of these things add calories to your midsection. One of them doesn't.

Like the article said, it's not that anybody is suggesting that you can smoke herb and then eat 2,000 calories and not gain weight. It says that the average toker is less obese (it doesn't say "in perfect shape") than the average non-toker is.

this is due to cannabis turning off the sensor in my stomach that says : stop eating you are full and of course my fault for giving in to the munchies:D

oddly, if I am hungry and I smoke, I get a reduction in appetite. Also, if I am performing an endurance sport, toking seems to help me last longer.

skinny people that eat a bunch of junk and don't gain weight can still have high blood pressure and cholesterol

I consistantly go up or down a good 50 pounds<<<< every few years because the munchies takes over my life. I go from fab to flab and back again, hit the gym and run and hold onto that body for a year and try to meet as many chicks as I can, then when I get one or lose one I go to the munchies. The munchies is a national epidemic - look at the data - most obese people are low-income. That's a fact. Now look at the majority of people in low-income brackets - they like all smoke weed! We ALL smoke weed! And we get the munchies!
How many motherfuckers can say they brains dryrotted from pot?
You got it like I got it or not?
If you did you would know just what I'm talking 'bout
When your tongue's rotting out from cotton mouth
When you end up becoming so dependent on weed
That you end up spending a G
In the vending machine
You got the munchies
Look at you

If you're saying that this can't be true because you're heavy, well then you're one of the 14 - 17%.

"But only between 14% and 17% of those people who admitted to taking a toke at least three times a week were overweight."

drink lots of water and fruit and yogurt or high protein foods and snacks... control yourself . don't buy junk food so you won't be likely to reach for it at home. I'm just as likely to crave junk even when im not high, only difference is i can eat a lot more after i smoke.

Everyone saying the study is bullshit, I think your dismissing a hypothesis a bit prematurely...

There are enough chemicals and molecules in cannabis that one of them could be affecting metabolism rates... Maybe blood pressure, maybe the absorbption of fat, appetite effects, or the efficiency of processing fatty foods or carbs in a way that helps control obesity... Many possibilities, and like the researchers, I think we should hold back judgement instead of saying 'this study is BS...'

ATM it is just a correlation, and denying the correlation is just the same as the naysayers who deny MMJ and it's medical properties. Take it for what it is, my .02... It might not be a weight loss miracle but to deny any possibilities as BS and its relation to obesity is shortsighted and narrowminded. Much more productive to discuss our personal experiences like some have done in this thread to try to find other external reasons for the stat if you can't believe it....

My 2 cents... When i stopped smoking for a half+ year, i drank more beer = gained weight. Now i have some weed, i hardly drink.
