What year was Britain at its finest?

3 June 1940 the Dunkirk evacuation.

Others were ferried from the beaches to the larger ships, and thousands were carried back to Britain by the famous "little ships of Dunkirk", a flotilla of around 700 merchant marine boats, fishing boats, pleasure craft and Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeboats—the smallest of which was the 15 ft (4.6 m) fishing boat Tamzine, now in the Imperial War Museum.

I think that was probably Britain's finest moment :tiphat:

Either that or Boadicea getting pissed off with the Romans.

I agree with those who say ~1940. Hitler was kicking ass and Britain didn't surrender. If they had, they (and America) would be speaking German now.

That merlin engine really was a breakthrough in the US. Tomcats had 1000hp and outside superior piloting, Zero's ate them for breakfast. Merlin had 2000hp, enough to outmaneuver the Japanese.

I saw the biggest chrome plated car in the world. It's got a 12 cylinder PT boat engine that generates 3000 hp. Dude said they got it up to 170 mph and were afraid they couldn't stop it.

might go close to britains best, Cookie. my old man was taken off Dunkirk beach. he was nineteen. think of that! no joints among the troops in those days either.

and Stainless ... for me the monetary value of something is meaningless. people pay good money even for things like coca cola and cigarettes!

The UK ain't too bad at the moment...

By that I mean my neighbours are good friendly peeps. There is a wide range of cultures on this little island. The weather is pretty brutal at times but even this adds some character. I've travelled a fair bit and we have some really stunning geography...usually not all that far from big modern cities.

The UK is old. Culturally old. Societies going back thousands of years. After an extended stay in a 'newer' country I kinda miss that!

Pubs. Old pubs. Independent pubs. Serving flat room temp cellar local ales and Big D peanuts ;).

2011. There I said it. There's much to complain about...but there's a fuck load more to be thankful for.

In terms of wartime greatness...when we literally 'ruled the waves' with a huge naval force and developed a chain of watch barracks along the entire coast is pretty cool.

I am jealous of America's vast spaces. I want to put a flag in some ground...stake out my border and build my family a home...that still seems possible in America and that has to be a great thing.
