I was renting houses in asheville. I went to meet a landlady. She looked me right in the eye and said: "its a good neighborhood but there are some coloreds over there". To which I replied "colored what?" being new to the south and clueless to this kind of talk. And that's the most liberal part of the state...

lot of history between whites n blacks in south, its still segregated to an an extent, just not by law. there's still bitterness and anger also.

Asheville is really the place to be, but it is STILL IN THE SOUTH and it's small and incestuous.

The locals hate new folks, especially if your from florida. All these rich floridians are coming up and paying out the ass for houses making everybodies home value go up and therefore taxes. Ashville used to be a nice mountain town, now its getting flooded with transplants from florida.

I really dig the tunnel. Goes way back to when I was a LITTLE kid. This was before I-40 and the 74 bypass. If I'm not mistaken, Tunnel Rd used to be US74.

Either coming or going we'd stop at Buck's and get a chipped ham sandwich for a quarter. It sounds gross but they were really good.

After I-40 and eventually the 74 bypass were built, I didn't see the tunnel for decades. As a little kid, I remembered a huge tunnel... it must have been 4 lanes. Lol, as an adult I revisited and it's a quaint little two-lane tunnel that happens to be long enough to make it cool, even for old farts. Really cool riding a Harley or driving a hot rod.

It was and still is a bumper to bumper drag on the weekends. But back when the only thing to do on a Friday or Saturday night was catch a movie or a bite to eat, the whole strip was flooded with babes and guys chasing em. They're still chasing girls but the strip ain't the same.

NC already has some pretty lenient laws regarding cultivation...even less than california where you can face 2-3 years.....NC laws according to norml cultivation or possession of less than 10lbs for sale is less than 12 months in jail....30 months for 50lbs....plus they have first time offender diversion programs

i dont know about all that. i was out in boone/jefferson area. somehow my landlord believed me to be growing, she let the authorities know. they raided my house while I was out of town. completely illegal search. took firearms, pictures, etc.
they tried to trump up some 'manufacturing' charges. but since the search was illegal as hell, and since there were no plants on site ;], they couldnt charge me. they were trying really hard, but honestly it was a joke. the DA apologized. got my stuff back, with a smile.
the detectives, or lack there of, were real sticklers, treated me as if I was a thug or drug pusher. they kept telling me that i was 'going to go down hard'. and that i should try to 'save myself.' they even tried to convince me that my wife spilt her guts. but stone we remained. funny stuff. you'd figure meth addicts would be there first line of work to do. still loved them mountains. miss what it feels like to be snowed in for a week or two at a time.

NC isn't as bad as other states on their laws but it was still very conservative when I was there. I heard of one person who was caught in possession of 30lbs and he did almost three years in jail. He was charged with a huge list but only took a trafficking 10-50lb charge and max sentence.

We have the most conservative legislature since Reconstruction. The Democrat governor says she won't seek a second term. Right now they're going after unions and abortion. If they're able to keep they're majority, wouldn't be surprised if weed reform is pushed back as long as they're in control. They might even roll back decriminalization.
