If you're smoking it all yourself, grow the weed YOU like best. If for others, grow what they will pay you the most for. If you grow even a pound that sells for $200 more than what they usually pay for other weed, the seeds are paying for themselves quickly. If you're doing 20 pounds a month, that's $4000 a month in extra income for a one-time $200 expense. Most things in growing fall into the "economies of scale" formulas.

The really good strains, Jack Herrer, Sensi star, etc, arent cheap.
Every really good strain ive grown has been a little pricey. In some instances your actually paying for quality, but many breedes and seed retailers have taken advantage of that circumstance and are charging big money for mediocre weed to infer its really good.

Another factor is name. Some famous breeders/companies have a couple 3 decent strains, and use their reputation to charge out the ass for the other dozen mediocre pollen chucking efforts they have up for sale.

Bottom line: Good strains arent cheap, but you cant use that as a guide because many mediocre strains arent cheap either..

Very well put. But transversely, just because you only pay $40.00 for a strain doesn't necessarily mean it's not quality either.

Some of the best weed I've grown was in the $40-$50 price range. Sure every seed wasn't a winner, and a bit of pheno hunting was in order, but that can be said of the pricier seeds too.

Every seed has potential to be great, but that potential doesn't come with a guarantee, no matter if it's $40 or $250.

Also, if you're looking for a keeper mom, then $250 isn't a lot if you run that plant over and over. You'll recoup that $250 easily. It's a business decision as well as a preference.

It's up to you to decide if something is worth the asking price.

I wondered the same thing untill I got my hands on some of REZ's Svf x cd .It blows anything ive grown away ,and any of the stuff coming in from the west coast.I'm now convinced the extra $ is worth it .No more 50 dollar packs for me

Some of the best genetics Ive ever had came from $250 a kilo brick weed from ole Mexico. There is a hell of a lot of competition in the seed market. What ever is all the rage is pricy at the moment and will be cheaper tomorrow. It was Indicas for the longest time. Then Autoflowers were the rage now it is fast finishing Sativas. You don't hear talk on here now about Sativa snobs. Legalization is coming and the current get it while you can attitude will diminish.

I agree that once you got an elite strain you'll hardly regret the high price you payed.
But for me it's more an ethical matter because there's not a single reason for such an high price considering how much seeds everyone can produce easily enough.
If you're really dying for a 250$ pack, find a couple friends and split the cost then make seeds to share and never come back. Spending too much as routine keep the seed business overpriced.
Try to support really dedicated breeders that respect the community with fair prices and practices.

Peace

I'd say the more expensive strains would definitely have better packaging that's for sure but when I check my seeds I notice the White Label beans have a nice little swanky bubble dome as do the Flying Dutchmen's and they were only about 30 and 35 bucks respectively whereas my Casey Jones #3 f2's only have a baggy and a sticker... hhmmmnnnm, nah not packaging. I'm pretty sure it's not the packaging. In all seriousness though it's a hard one to answer because value, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Also, the expensive seeds may bear genetic instructions for an awesome strain which posesses unheard of high characteristics but is really hard to grow, susceptible to desease and prone to hermie in which case it's going to take not only a skilled grower but a grower with a pretty good set-up to bring those genes to the fore and make them shine. I have smoked some really expensive strains and not thought much of them but then I have been blown away by the sheer ball tingling potency of a cherry AK-48 from lowly Nirvana which IMO was better than any of the serious AK I ever had. So many things go into making amazing bud amazing that to judge on seed price alone is a mistake. It would be a mistake however to say that expensive beans aren't worth paying for as quite often they are more than worth the monetary outlay and the same goes for the cheap beans. I'd rather be charged once for seed and grow for a long time than be put at the mercy of people who step into our world only to take from it then walk away. It all comes down to supply, demand, trends, fads etc. It's a case of capitalism and human desires playing out in a subculture where you will find both blinding greed and inexplicable selflessness living under the same roof.

the way I look at it.. if you get one female from a pack of seeds and get an oz from her... the pack has payed for itself.

Then if you are lucky enough to get more then one female and get clones then... shit.... thats bonus. :D

but I have never payed more then $125 for a pack.... :tiphat:

But this doesn't take into account the time, electricity, risk, etc. I'd say three ounces and then it's paid for itself. ;)

i think the bottom line is research research research !!

reserach your seeds well and you wont go wrong !! and not just on one fourm or one message board either !!

there are real gems to be had for cheap from breeders who arnt massive or household names but have good reps and are running the same genetics but only a few generations down the line and have made there own slections !!

jack herer is just one example !! there is the orgininal sensi of course but then they are lots of others witch basicly are sensi's but at half the price made by other breeders

and of course you have breeders sellin gimic american named clone seeds for stupid prices not sayin there not good but take it all with a pinch of salt and research far and wide !!!

and not just there own biased self serving fourms

It's been at the top of the food chain for many years I agree  Since way back on Overgrow actually. Any lapses in this have been primarily do to lack of available seeds despite the high demand for them and last time I checked there are no $250.00 packs of Swt, actually I saw them going for $69/pack last drop for 15+ beans and they will easily out-perform many higher priced seed strains out there along with many clone only strains. Of course there are always stronger, bigger, meaner, you get the idea but most of them sure as hell ain't sweet & grapefruity. But please let me know when you find this so called $250.00 pack of Swt as I might have to pick some up and check it out ;)
