we don't need to argue about what we already know, keep it about the topic book.

Dirt! The Movie is well worth the time. Well worth it. Watching FoodMatters now. It's on YouTube. EDIT: Only the first 8 minutes are on YouTube.

thanks for yr post. I 'm trying to make compost for the first time and can't get my piles hot so this book might help.

carbon nitrogen ratio looking for ~25 to 30:1 /herbal inputs such as the book suggests et al are like "compost starter"

I love pointing out that the quick return method in the book has a name in Japanese: bokashi!

we all think of bokashi as pickling trash, but actually it just means composting with an inoculant of some type. back in the day they did not have an EM distributor and plastic buckets.

You are confusing what the term free is here. You still have to collect, move, and treat materials. This is not free. It requires time and effort. I would rather support local economy and waste recycling by purchasing compost from a vendor.
time is free friend, effort is what we put into our time(may come to a surprise to u but some here are passionate) & you reap free "healthy" food

compost from vendors eh,well here in cali
thers a grn light for composting sewage sludge along with the trash you PAY to haul away & then sold right back to yea
lets not forget carbon foot print

confusing is what these people sell as compost because it smells, smells like sh&*T!

i started using the quick return inoculant on our compost piles, mostly consisting of weeds and grass clippings, but also a run with lots of chicken shit, and it kicks ass. you can get everything you need for the inoculant at a good health food store if you cant find the ingredients locally.

making compost doesn't need to be about extra effort, just more efficient effort. the time not spent bagging your lawn clippings can be used to inoculate your new compost heap, etc.

The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth

by William Logan Bryant

This book was the inspiration for the movie and i think you all will find it much more profound.
