micro grow, 1 gallon dwc

my friend is doing a small one gallon dwc grow for a single plant. He had a pretty good harvest the first time around so this will be his second attempt.

Nice I love to see micro dwc.

PLEASE MOUNT YOUR LIGHTS.

I dont know if those fluorescents can burn mylar but why take any chances with a fire hazard.

Good luck.

impressive. i usually start my seedlings in soil, i didnt know the roots could be that much after only a week. all i ever see is the tiny little sprout on top and i assume its prolly still only just the taproot going at that point.
those lights won't get hot enough to burn the mylar but they can warp it or melt it a little. plus those bulbs aren't efficient like that. most of the light comes off the side you should mount em on the ceiling try and get anouther so you can have 4 and face em to the middle like a <> .

there isnt a lot of headroom so he had to mount the lights vertically. the mylar hasn't melted yet.. so far, so good! as for the rockwool, it was cut into a 1/4th to fit the 2" netpot. a pencil was used to create hole to drop the seed down.

this was his first plant (next to a 1 gallon milk jug for size reference). it had an additional 42W cfl, but it also grew in a much larger space. my friend is thinking he might have to do some LST on this current plant due to space limitations but we will see...

yesss! im slowly but surely getting into hydro myself so i need/love to see grows like these. gonna be running 16 sites for now in recirculating system, 3gl grow bags filled with hydroton, dripper rings for each, floor has drainage flange THEN once i reap from that i will be going full DWC with 2gl (or 3gl) buckets.

i have to say im kinda excited!

How much smoke he gets from this?
30-40g
Looks nice! Are the lights actually attached to anything, or just resting on those boxes like it appears?
HAHA YES, just rectangular boxes. so he figured you were right about the placement of these lights being unsafe so some stoner engineering took place. he created a small table out of pvc tubes, used a sheet of glass (from a picture frame) to create a table top, and placed the cfls on top of it. pics below
That is a crazy amount of roots. another reason to do a DWC next round
yea, whats crazy is while its a 1 gallon tube, it only holds .65 gallons of water. when it was near the end of the trees life span, he had to fill the gallon twice a day since it was drinking so much water.

cant wait to see your thread FRIENDinDEED and thanks Secrecy

there is some browning on the leaves but not too worried since the rest of the plant looks healthy. the nodes look nice and close together.

any advice on lst, should he tie it down now?

There's such a waste of space surrouding the bucket. I'd tell your "friend" to look for a rubbermaid tub or food storage container that would fit the case better. More water volume means less maintenance. Plus, you could probably get the overall height lowered with a tub which would give your "friend" more room to grow.

first off nice log you got going on! nice DWC set up you got going on.... ive never done 1 gallon but i have done 1 liter and 5 gallon so im interested on your results and the out come of this little one. If you dont mind me asking what strain is that? but onto the question :)

The browing on the leaf is a sign of some sort but what degree to... doesnt seem big at this point. Could be a sign of chlorinated water or the minerals in the tap water (assuming.... if im wrong dont hold it again me). If you are using tap let you water sit out in a 5 gallon bucket or a tub of some sore for 24-36 hours before rez change with a airstone to help keep it aerated. that will give the water time to evaporate all of the chlorine and hard minerals in the tap water. Now do you have a meter to measure E.C./PH/PPM (Parts Per Million) of the water before and after nutrients are applied? Will help save a bit of hassle when it comes to hydro. But the over all structure of the plant is nice and she will blow up realll soon my friend. have fun be safe

forgot to add about the LST.... wait till she has 6-7 internodes or true sets of leaves and just use some wire ties/string/exc and a few tacks or what ever your gonna use to hold down what. go just below the top of the plant and wrap your tie around her and slowly bend her down and tie off. the top will slow down for a bit but the side branching will catch up in lateral growth. and just keep tying down what ever you feel necessary. hope this helps

You can LST far earlier than 6-7 nodes if need be. I bend as soon as I feel like the plant can keep root while being bent completely horizontal, with a counter tie of course. I have extremely limited head room in my box, so I go a full 90 degrees, right at the lip of the pot. Just wait a bit after water, the plant will bend and not be as stiff.

Then I just start tying off all the side branches in different direction to make a circle of branches. Good for vertical lighting. You hit maximum surface area.
