EZ Clone water pump replacement

I have an EZ Clone 60 and the original mag drive pump died recently. I ran to the store and picked up a cheap EcoPlus pump. None of the fittings that come with the EcoPlus can screw on to the EZ Clone sprayer pipes.

My question is if anyone has replaced the pump with generic one and has any idea what the plumbing part I am looking for is called? It is some kind of fitting, coupling, or nipple i believe. Below is a picture of the fittings that came with the pump. The part I am looking for would have grooves on each side.

If anyone knows what the name or size of that part would be that would be great. I can then edit this post to be a guide for replacing the EZ Clone pump with a generic one.

take your pump model # and find a replacement armature for the pump motor...reducing the number of times you unplug your pump will extend the life of the armature.

good luck! I've replaced mine 5 times in a year...because that was easier than trying to find parts to make a substitute pump copacetic.

Welcome to ICMag! enjoy your stay!

Thanks for that advice. I'm assuming that you have found that the armature is the part that often fails in the pumps? If that is the case than I will definitely fix my original pump.

When I find an armature I will post a guide to fixing broken pumps. I think that would be beneficial to people as well.

I still want to figure out what the proper fitting is called because it should be super easy but I'm just not sure what it's called. The reason I bought that other pump is because my original pump failed one day and I found it later with completely wilted clones. I ran to the store and picked up what I could get quick enough to turn it back on. To be clear the EZ Clone works by just resting the sprayer manifold on the fitting that comes with the EcoPlus pump but it does not screw on. My concern is that the pressure it not consistent and the manifold can twist and turn around since it is sort of floating. But if anyone is in that situation you can get it to work by just resting it on the pump fittings that come with the pumps.

dont buy the pumps off ebay. they are refurbs. and they suck. i got a year out of my original and a year into my replacement from the factory.

Phillthy - good call. that is a good point to add to this

Here is a picture of the original pump that came with the EZ Clone.

I believe this is a Danner Supreme Mag Drive pump. I Believe the number is 7 but I have to check.

As you can see this pump comes with a fitting built in that has grooves on top. This allows you to screw the manifold on as-is. The new EZ Cloners have their own brand pumps now. Both the Danner and the EZ Clone pumps are $70 - 150 range. The pump I got that was a similiar GPH was $40.

If that mag drive pump is a #7, the outlet on top is a 1/2" male pipe thread. Assuming your new EcoPlus pump has an outlet that is a smooth (unthreaded) tube 3/4" outside diameter, you would need to get an adaptor that has 3/4" SLIP on one side, and a 1/2" male pipe thread to screw into your manifold. This site has a good selection of PVC plumbing fittings:

I think the part you will need is under "Reducing Male Adaptors - S x Mips -#436. The third one down: 3/4" S x 1/2" Mips ....$0.42

PeteMoss - Thanks. That is the link I needed.

You're right that would be the part you would need to attach to the existing fittings that come with the EcoPlus . I assume you would have to glue that piece to the closest size fitting.

Here is a picture of the part that PeteMoss is talking about we will note this as

Solution #1 where you glue this to the type of fitting that I posted a picture of in the first post.

Solution #2

Here is another piece that I found that I think would make this process easier

The 3/4" X 1/2" should be right if the calculations are correct. This way you could screw this on to the water pump and just screw on the manifold. None of the fittings from the EcoPlus would be used.

Solution #3

Here is another potential fix I found based on what trichrider mentioned. I am curious Trichrider, when you mention armature are you referring to the impeller? If that is the part that fails most often with water pumps then it is a cheap part to replace and wold be nice to have a few on hand. Here is the image from the Danner website of the water pump diagram

The individual impeller is only $15 so that would be sweet if that is all it takes to get my broken pump working. I think I will purchase one to test and see if my particular pump has a broken impeller.

Here is the link to the Danner/Pondmaster site where they sell the individual replacement parts
