It takes time for a new grower to become proficient enough to even discern just who to try and emulate.
Until said time, they're just playing monkey see, monkey do.
I think that should be ample time to determine who not to take advice from, not because he's a dooshnozzle, but because his growing situation is so much different than yours.
Seriously, the best piece of advice I think I could give,besides the required prerequisite reading.
Find someone who's situation seems similar to your own, and you like what he's doing, and fake it until you make it.
Eureka moments to ensue
There's always going to be cliques and popularity contests amongst certain members(*cough*attentionslores*cough*), don't get caught up in the hype, which shouldn't be all that difficult for someone with enough sense.

I would guess that the "merit badges", (ie: mentor tags), and "helpful post ratings" were created in an attempt at a remedy and to clearly distinguish who the community, (or at least the admins.), considers to be the trusted, "master growers".
...We'd almost have to start everyone over, with a clean slate, or create another, completely separate 'rep system' for "grow evaluations"...
But, it would probably take a lot of work to set up, (actually, I have no idea what that would require), and could be a tad redundant, unless everyone agreed to use it as intended.
And having the original "karma" rating system, "un/helpful post" ratings, and the hypothetical: "grower's achievement" ratings, might be a little much...
Or heck, maybe it's a fantastic idea, lol.
The closest it ever was to what Cookie Monster is suggesting is what they had at Overgrow where the karma was tallied based on how much was grow related and how much wasn't. If you held the mouse curser over someone's karma it would give you a percentage of grow related vs non grow related. Mostly this was done by keeping track of where the karma was given. If it was given in a grow related sub forum then it counted as grow related karma regardless of why one person actually gave karma to another.
Soon having lots of karma with a high percentage of it being grow related was very desirable and how did people respond? They started making sure they gave all thier friends karma in their grow related threads only, even if the karma was really meant for something said in a non grow related thread.
Ultimately there is only just so much that can be done to karma points or reputation points to make them reflective of what you want them to be and the rest is just up to people using it properly. Like was said by someone already, the problem isn't with the system but rather with those that use it.

^^^^ when first here I had kno idea about the rep thingy. I just pay for what I learn with what I 'think' I know. When Hempcat pointed the myic button out I was very suprised. Although I am not disagreeing with you about that I have noticed over time the kind of statement you are making only being made by ppl with a full or almost full rep bar.
