Not think of returning to the rightful owner? Only 1 word comes to mind quite frankly, parasite.
You throw something away, it is trash. A foreclosed home and all it's contents are the property of the note holder. The banks choose to have their house preppers dispose of the contents as they aren't in the pawn star business. Sorry to muddy your thoughts with facts.

Call jewelers for an insurance appraisal. That'll tell you what it is "worth." Then you can probably expect around 50% if you are lucky if you sell it.

Diamonds are not rare, prices are kept up artificially mostly by a large consortium called De Beers.
...
If you can't pay for something with cash, Gold will always work, no matter where you are, Diamonds won't.

I could explain the above a more professional way but that's what I basically boils down to....
Perfectly succinct. It takes the history channel an hour to make the same point ;)

I think the real question should be..why does it cost me so much if it really isn't worth what I'm paying. Fuck. Tell me it costs the same for gold as it does with gold and a diamond. Fuck again

Curious, how did you get into doing this?.

knew the right guy....

actually, it was a childhood friends father who was the "handy man" for the banks... he would go and fix all of the broken shit in the homes that the banks owned. Before he knew it, he was doing every damn thing for the homes for the banks. Eventually old man grew old, and i had been one of his right hand men. Eventually old man died, and I happened to know the contact at the bank by this time... so guess who slides in place? the original old man's son is a heroin addict and i have him work for me every so often. i Often wonder if he became a H addict because his own father chose to put ME under his wing instead of his own son.... we shall never know...

but all i know is that i am not to glad to hear this news about diamonds not being worth much. i knew gold was worth a lot, as I do find a LOT of silver items (sterling, coins) cleaning out homes.... but it is rare for ME personally to find diamonds. Ive had some workers of mine find diamonds, but i never had personally found any. when workers find stuff, they keep it. it does not go to me because i am the leader. i do not operate like that.

i dont think anyone chooses to not pay there mortgage... its more like they got fucked and could no longer afford it.

When I get fucked and can no longer pay my mortgage i'll make sure to leave all my expensive jewelry laying around in the house when I leave.
Plenty of people are choosing not to pay their mortgages. If you're paying on a 500,000 mortgage and your house is now worth 200,000 why would you keep paying? C'mon PTB. You're usually much smarter than this.

Most jewelers don't buy estate pieces because appraised value is usually double what the re-sale value would be. Definitely get it appraised by multiple jewelers, but your best bet is to sell it on e-bay. TBH that's where anyone not a jewelry retailer is getting the most money for jewels.

Forget getting an ideal here, no one can tell via the nets even if they are a subject matter expert. Awesome story though congrats. I suggest taking it to multiple jewelers for an appraisel. Good luck and let us know how it pans out.

I would take the ring to a different town than were you found it to have it appraisel done on it.

Diamonds are worth *some* cash, but not much.
Diamonds are not rare, prices are kept up artificially mostly by a large consortium called De Beers.

Gold is the world wide choice of international "currency".
If you can't pay for something with cash, Gold will always work, no matter where you are, Diamonds won't.

I could explain the above a more professional way but that's what I basically boils down to. Hence not much value to Diamonds, especially not from private sellers.

PS: The only "multiple jewelers" in this thread seem to be the ones bickering about your business, they ain't got a clue how things work but still think they should post *something*. ;)

^^^That is pretty spot on right there. 18 kt is usually reserved for nicer rings and rings made overseas (from the US). Most jewelry in the US is made from 14kt/also stamped 585 or 10 kt. It's keeps the manufacturing costs down to use 14kt and 10kt.

24 kt pure gold 1000
18 kt 750 (75% pure)
14 kt 585 (58.5% pure)
10 kt 417 (41.7% pure)

The small stones (most likely diamonds) from the photo from what I can see appear to be less than .01 carat(ct) most likely .0075 or .0050. Their cost is around a couple dollars a piece.

A written appraisal from a local jewelry store runs $85 which is useful when selling pieces and required for most insurance companies. A verbal appraisal is free. Obviously this is local to me so prices will vary.

Your best best to get the most money is to sell the piece as a whole to someone or over eBay if possible. A lot of places will buy the gold but it'll be tough finding someone to buy the smaller diamonds separately. A lot of jewelers buy diamonds in parcels and get a better deal on quantity purchases, but yes, yours are still worth "something". You can always find jewelry stores willing to take it in on trade if you buy a more expensive item. Just something else to consider.

knew the right guy....

Isn't that always the story. I am working a source right now trying to get a private contracting job in the middle east. I guess we will see. The guy has the pull, the contacts, the experience; I just have to convince him to come out of retirement and touch a cell phone for a day or two for some guy he doesn't really know. Lol. Its all about who you know in this world.
