Hot water, iso and salt, is a fine technique...
(I'd suggest following the iso/salt with a vinegar, to remove all salt and hard water residue, and then a last water rinse, should you go that route.)
However, I have heard that iso can remove labels...

Personally, I use and recommend 'Grunge Off'...
Another advantage to grunge off is that you can make a bottle last a really long time, since you can reuse it, by straining it;
(I keep it in couple squirt bottles, for easy use and to keep the cleaner stuff separate from the dirtier);

I'm still on the 2nd or 3rd bottle of the 6 pack we got 3 yrs ago.
Here's my process: I rinse a few times with super hot water, then squirt in a bit of grunge off, rinse a few times and it will be as clean as the day you got it.
Oh, and I use Q-tips and pipe cleaners for the small pieces, (hitters, downstems, etc.)

But yeah, I would also suggest using an ash catcher, they definitely help keep your tube cleaner, longer...
Clean whenever you need to "change" the water, and it will be a breeze.

...Cleanliness is next to G-dliness, as 'they' say. ;)
Of course, I must admit, I have been uncharacteristically bad about keeping the glass clean recently, (since my op), I am so ashamed.
This will inspire me to get on top of that tomorrow! So thanks!! :)

Running hot water outside of the water pipe will also loosen up the resin from within, especially if there's any 90%+ grade alcohol or other cleaning product inside of it. Sometimes I like to turn up the water heater temperature up slightly so I can get some really hot water [not STUPIDLY hot, and not too quickly!], and I swear to goodness, the heat becomes a crazy catalyst if you can get it to be hot enough.

With enough patience, you're able to make your piece look like the day you got it, literally crystal clear. Well, that is assuming you got it brand new...:p

I'm very obsessive compulsive, so...a clean piece for me is an absolute must. If you can aim the hot water even in the most troublesome spots and then use some sort of force to "erode" away at it, I promise you, you'll have pristine pieces.

EDIT: Ash catchers can seriously help reduce the amount of cleaning you have to do. You don't need one, but they are a wonderful investment and considerably easier to clean [depending on the style that you get].

Thanks for the replies. Ok so not so different then the regular ones. I've heard of grudge off, I wonder if my local smoke shop has it. I know they have something. I didnt know you could reuse the stuff though,thanks for the tip. I have a nice bong now and I need to clean it soon heh. I just plan on upgrading for christmas. Gift to myself :)
