I use these.....

picture.php

Darkroom louvers. 100% light tight. They come in various sizes. I use the 8x8 ones myself. I installed 4 of them on the lower portion of my growroom door. The airflow is greatly restricted, which is why I have 4, but are great for letting in passive air and keeping negative pressure. And most of all, for keeping light out.
Some models have a fan attached directly to the louver itself, as an add-on.

thanks dude! that's exactly what i was looking for, i didn't realize everybody was posting their versions and upgrades in the replies of the original diy, even though some are so different from the original they aught to have their own sticky! thanks again for sending me back to that super valuable diy and it's ten pages of super valuable feedback...it could have saved me hours of searching and thinking lol

In my experience, the best/easiest/most fool-proof way of lightproofing (and insect/germ proofing) your intake is to install a small carbon filter on it. Not one of those flimsy HEPA things, but a proper filter akin to what you'd install on an exhaust for smell...albiet smaller.

I haven't seen any pics better than these, but it gives an idea of what's inside.

I found the inverted Y louver but are these necessarily light tight? I called the company but was told by the lady on the phone that she was unsure and her supervisor also had no clue. Seems like the price for the 24 by 24 is not to bad. http://www.amscousa.com/Door_Hardware/Lites_and_Louvers/Anemostat_Door_Louvers_Inverted_Y.htm

I just went to HD and got a L shaped tin and was going to make my own. I got 100' of L shaped metal. Using them to build a box around 2 window ac units that I can not get light tight to save my life. But for what I spent and time I may be better off ordering 2 of the 24 by 24 models for $85 each.

We installed them through the wall and put foam only to find out that they are not light tight by far. Frigidaire model. I can't spray paint it because it cannot be pulled out of the wall and taken apart. The light is not intense and this room is on during the day so the light through the ac is only an issue from sunup to 8:30 am and from 8:30 pm to about 9:30 as my lights run from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm.
