Designing a Room for Soil Growing

one thing I don't get about vert is the claim of more canopy surface area. seems to me as the plants grow towards the light, your surface area is diminishing.

If u'r able to pull the support system back a little, then you can maintain the depth consistent as the plants grow... and they do grow upwards more than towards the light. But I'm basing this off of a vertical SOG design... 4 vertical walls squared around a stack of lights, where the walls are movable to & fro the light stack. Only way I've seen the canopy/yield theory pan out.

instead of 2 lights i'd consider a light rail.hell,i'd consider one anyway, they are worth the money IMo_One less hood, bulb, cost of electricity etc.they cover a good area, better all around growth.i've had mine for 5 yrs. and if it stopped working,i'd replace it immediately.

ijim, those are good and practical items. I like these ideas of a workbench.

I changed my mind about mothers and cloning. Part of what I would do is bottle up each plant and store under vacuum for months. I do that now. So I'd have inventory of many strains aging. So these would be seed starts mostly.

Smiley I am digging your room pics! Very motivating. OK on the 5x10 flower room. 5 x 10 Veg room also?

Canniption, I could do 2 light movers /rails, each with 600W HPS, in a 5 x 10 flower room for 6 plants?

This is a great thread.. my eyes are glued to it.

I'm imagineering a room atm.. no window etc...6.5x9 with two doors on the same side.. weird room.. gotta cut a lil hole in the ceiling to exhaust... two holes... one to run to the intake, a bathroom fartfan vent... the hole other to the out... which will be the exhaust pipe on the roof that previously emitted farts.

hmm, if you are looking for a fun growing experience then i would stay horizontal, which may even give you the benefit of still being able to see when you are older ;)

i see everyone raving about vert as though it's a magic wand to high yields - but i havent seen or heard about many that yield more than i do with horizontal scrog.

anyway one thing that everyone agrees on is that vert is hard to work on with the lights on.

Colosseum style just looks like a gigantic pain in the ass.

Terracing makes a little more sense.

Def would make my flower area 5x10 instead of 4x8. Large footprint hoods cover this very well and it's quite an increase.

I mount as much as I can on the walls. I have a bunch of stuff I hang from the ceiling and on walls but it's in the laundry room right now.

I would follow your electrical panel construction. Very neat and tidy and portable. I'm so glad you pointed me to your thread.

I think a drying room would be a good thing as well. Dark with humidity / temp control? With clotheslines to hang buds until ready to go into jars? Or is that overkill?

My veg side/work room is 8x7 and I couldn't have it any smaller. I do all the work in there including making hash and trimming. I fill pots outside and bring them in but still do transplanting in the room. Space gets used up. 4sgft for a rez, 8 sq.f.t for a veg light.

Here's a gallery of the electrical board. I thought I had done a write up showing the whole construction but cant find it.....

Things to change or re do

Need to set up better quality filters on intakes, stuff gets by and cakes on the fans etc.

Use grow ropes for everything. After using grow ropes on the veg light I can honestly tell "jack chain" to go fuck itself lol

Put the reservoir up on a platform with a spigot or a pump wand.

Build the electrical panel more upright or vertical instead of laid out horizontal.... it takes up too much wall space and I don't need to access it very often. I could have an entire veg area up on that wall instead :D

Use the ceiling, it's wasted storage space.

I'll think of more...... when are you starting construction?

Just water and tea only organic soil and kicking 3+ per round out of 32sq.ft. flower area. This room has met/exceeded my expectations. All the framing, drywall, insulation, plastic, electrical cheaper than a single 4x4 tent.

I yielded roughly 5 lbs annually for five years out of this space using a 400 HPS. I used four 8'l x 6'h x 2'd shelving units,($40/ea @ home depot) three facing out and one facing in. You can move the shelving any way you want to create your unique space, loading the shelves up with stuff is nice cover and if your good, it takes a bit of observation to notice the growspace is missing from the basement floorplan.

So I'll try for 8x10 for veg room. Thanks. I'll be using OSB for the inner walls, painted white. That way I can hang or mob wall / ceiling mounted things without having to attach to stud or joist.

You might see about simply replacing the carbon with the correct screen size and upgrade to coconut based activated carbon. The units you have look big enough. I build my own. Cheap and super effective.

I will have to look into these. Never heard of them but I can see how there could be an improvement over chains.

Put the reservoir up on a platform with a spigot or a pump wand.

I'd like to automate the watering from a res.

That's a great point. I will have to consider my electrical needs. While I have wired up plenty, your layout was really an artform.

Use the ceiling, it's wasted storage space.

My plywood walls and ceiling will prove handy. I would have liked to have suspended the plywood on resilient clips and channel for soundproofing, but the weight of whatever equipment could over-load the suspended channel. I may look at another means of decoupling that ceiling plywood. I would likely install the ply over a base layer of 5/8" drywall for added mass. Install Green Glue between the drywall and plywood.

Thermally and acoustically isolated rooms.

I'll think of more...... when are you starting construction?

I'm a ways off. A few months, likely. Closing on a new house. Getting my priorities down.

I'll also need to access via secret door.

Hydrosun put me onto some killer insulation/wall cover. HERE He uses reflectix or prodex insulation/barrier instead of panda.

R15, helps with noise etc

I'm gonna pop for it pretty soon after seeing it at a friends garden.

That thin insulation helps with echo, but not soundproofing. It won't reduce sound traveling through the walls.

I like hard smooth painted walls. No mold. easy to clean, hang shit on, patch holes.

there was a arcticle on CC ,like 10 yrs ago written by DJSHORT and i think he said something about if you want the best effecientcy from your light mover then try to emulate the movement of the sun, on a what's it call'd? a circuler movement.

yea, u know with those huge sun system reflecter's with a radius of 4'...i think... you can make your own better huge reflector, but yea i think that's the idea,as long as u emulate the sun crossing the horizon.
