Gonna flip my girls, stick with the cmh or switch to hps?

Hey guys, here are pics of my two sour diesel girls, which are in a vert scrog around a 250 cmh.

I'm gonna flip them tonight, but wondering what bulb is best? I don't want them to develop too much foliage (which would happen under a cmh), as I'll just end up removing it. I was thinking a hps might be better for this reason - and that the extra stretch will help me fill out the entire screen + ensure there's enough space between bud sites.

What are your opinions?

Thanks!

HPS will induce flowering quicker, so shorten growth time and increase actual flower building time ..... you should get less foliage too

Make sure you get a SON-T+ or SON-T Pia, same thing just different manufacturers use different names .... 15% brighter and it has a pink tinge to the light

I've read several threads where people will veg with CMH and then keep the CMH for the first 2 weeks and the last 2 weeks of flowering, and use the HPS in between.

Experiment. Try it one way. Take pics. Record weights. Then try it the other way. Compare your pics and weights... and of course do some test smoking...

and then let us know!

Wicked guys, thanks a lot for the info - got the hps in there now =D

Anti, hopefully one day I'll be able to do that, but atm there's too many factors that would be different next time around. I probably won't be taking clones either as well. Nice idea though!

I have two budrooms. The smaller room has the same wattage per square foot, only half as big. 16' @ 1264w and 35' @ 2830w. I used the small room to test light combo's but now both are dedicated to budding.
The small room is 400 watts CMH (4000K) x 2 with 216 watts 6500k T5 sidelights x 4.
Foliage is a problem, fan leaves everywhere with up to 5" stems. The inside needs plucked weekly or it goobers up and turns soft.

The big room has 400 watt HPS x 3, CMH x 2, MH x 2. This room had far less stemmed leaf growth, UNTIL. I added sidelights, the new indica was sodium sensitive and needed dilution. 120 watts 5000K T8 x 3 for lighting alongside the HPS and 42 watts 2700K x 3 underneath. Holy rocket shots, the fan stems reached 6", leaves bigger than my spread hand. Most got left on, too many to deal with.

Not sure what this translates to, but fluorescent sidelights of any kind spur vegetative growth not found without the sidelights.
Let me qualify that, my sativa dominate plant reacts that way, my newly aquired indica grows differently, thus the T8's in the first place.

Oh yeah, almost forgot the other part.
Over 2 years I have been growing this sativa, I know this plant well. The CMH buds are smaller. The plant is better balanced and has greener color but the buds are smaller. Nor do the buds contain measurably more trichomes for the same stage, just smaller. Do I sound disappointed?

I haven't done a controlled side by side or anything, but I ran a cmh a few times and decided to go back to hps. CMH seems to make more leaf. I would say they are great for veg though.

You cant just say "hps is better" or "cmh the first wo weeks is what you want to do". It depends mainly on your strain and place.

I know yu made ur decision. ;) but in generel you have to think about what the light is doing with ur plant at each moment of its lifecircle.
for example if you have a sative dominated plant and dont want it to grow too much in heigth take the mh for some time.. if you have a strain which is known to be in need of some more time till the budding starts you can also think about keeping the mh because it wont speed up when the flower begins to bud.. thats managed by the 12/12. the light itself do not change what the plant is doing.. it just give it the chance for photosynthesis in different ways.

perhaps for the two first weeks of flowering a hps lamp with a higher amount of blue light would be the best for every grow..

sure buts not an hps. and as I know mh lamps doesnt produce the amount of lumens as a hps does.
but im not sure if i get this right... cause cmh lamps arent common in germany o.o
