What's new

temp is 80f with 400 watt hps, how much with 600?

If my air temp with lights on in my cab is 80f all day long, how much more will my internal temp rise in a 3x3 foot tent if I put a 600 watt hps in their?

Well if I stepped up my lighting I'd assume added ventilation/cooling is in order !! Peace

Oxygen - I am using a very similar setup to yours. 400w, 3x3 tent and thought about switching from 400w bare bub vert to 600w horizontal.

Like Cravenmore said, i also included either a cooltube or a cooled hood of some kind as a necessity.

Are you using a cooled hood/tube right now? Will you be using one in the future? Or a bare bulb 600w w/relfector

Assuming everything else is equal (never is) and the 80* constant is due a steady state temp intake w/o AC, then the cooling air would almost need doubled. 6" fan to 8", 4" to 6", not as much as it sounds.

Not equal:
humidity
ambient/tent temp ratio
tent material conductance
transvaporization rate (surface evaporation + leaf transpiration)

This is gaming, it will work fine, stick a thermometer in the canopy, shoot for 81-85 degrees, heck, this might be just what's needed to get the chlorophyll up to max efficiency temperatures.

The temperature rise is not going to be major, and 67 watts/square foot cools fine, many have more. I use 88 watts/foot and only exceed 86 degrees if the ambient exceeds 82, no AC.

77-86 is the target, the closer to 86 the better. Over or under shows a dramatic falloff in production. :kitty:

86 is optimum huh? i mean i guess that makes sense since that is like the general temp where they are from, at least i have heard anyway, near the equator there isn't any seasons so they would pretty much get that year round...

to be honest i have never heard what temps were optimal, my 400 keeps my cab at 82 all day but it's a smaller cab. it's nice to know a number though, since i've basically just tried to keep it as low as possible, now i know i have a few degrees to work with...

Yeah, over in the science section Spurr keeps kicking out articles and research relating to growing. The temp range was one of them I could understand. I went from the mid 70's to 82-86 about 6 weeks ago. The faster growth is visible, but so is going over temperature on hot days. Overall I come out ahead.
Research also said the same temps apply at night, even day/night temps produce less stretch. Have not been able to keep the budroom in the 80's with the lights off so I'll file that one under 'interesting'.

I'm working with a 3x3 space as well, and have been for a couple of years, in a closet split vertically veg/flower. For a while I tried my hand at vertical using the 600w, and it was a tight rope walk between really fat ass dense buds and bleached spots. I switched to horizontal and have a more beautiful 1gal sog than I could've ever imagined. I don't see why you couldn't hit a # easily first sog 600w horizontal.

Edit: I'm high, and totally missed the point of the original question. As for temps, like someone said if it becomes an issue which it might, upgrade ventilation. I'm using a 6" S&P inline for my entire closet, with supplemental A/C and it's pretty optimal.
