username and avatar questions

I see some usernames here that have never been used since they registered, some of them since 2004! Can't those that have not been active for 2 or more years be cancelled to free up that name for someone? Also, I notice some recent posts from names that say "guest" underneath them. Can someone post as a guest?
And I would really like an avatar and have no clue where to get them. Anyone have any ideas or similar questions of your own?

I think the "guests" are people who had their accounts deleted. After you delete your account your screen-name turns to "guest".

I first made my account in 2009, it sat un-active for 2 years and I just started using it again 3 months ago. I'm glad they don't delete un-active accounts.

i use to post from the local library and they labeled me as a guest cuz i never sign in( i don't like that public shit) oh yea while im sayin my friend was posting on a shroom site with his library card and they revoked his card , i know that was off topic but maybe some folks did'nt know? now they do.

That would seem very disrespectful to members who have had to serve time in jail for just growing a plant, seeing folk who have had the misfortune of being busted active and free again is a great thing.

Sometimes the posts are just a day or so ago, someone once told me somewhere that there is a way you can post without signing in. I would like to know if that's the case!
And certainly no disrespect to anyone who has gone to jail. But most of those people probably deleted their accounts. Whereas most of those people with zero posts after years were just kiddies playing probably, thinking it was cool to register at a cannabis site but too scared or no intentions to post. Before I signed on, I wanted to use a different name, and you guessed it, it was someone who registered who never used their account.

I believe the guest posts are done by members who have received certain diciplinary actions.They are not banned,but put into,as japanfreakier put it, a "badboy" timeout.Don't quote me on this,I could be wrong.

You can use any picture you want as an avatar as long as its sized correctly.Click "my IC" and the avatar option is on the left.

When I first discovered this site a couple years ago and looked at signing up as a member, there were several options. Some of them required membership fees. More $$$ got you bigger and better avatars, with the ritziest being animated. I think that was a life membership. If you wanted to post without the $$ upfront, then you could participate as a "guest" with no name or avatar. I suspect that anybody posting nowadays as "Guest", signed up here under those circumstances.

If you want a special avatar pic, Google Images is a great place to start.

Sometimes when a member cancels their account all the posts under that name will show as "guest." But not always, I posted on IC Mag for about 3 years under a name, and cancelled my account, and all my old posts still list my screen name, with the word "guest" listed right below it.

we don't delete accounts unless we are asked to, or there is a security issue
as to old accounts that look dormant, some people register but don't post on the forums
they may be using the site for reference
or just using the PM system to keep in touch with old friends

No, it's not possible. Any guest posts are by someone who deleted their own account. If you saw a guest post with today's date for example, that would mean they posted it today then deleted their account on the same day. Guest posts have nothing to do with being banned

I have seen accounts several years old where the user may have only 19 posts.
