T5 vs. MH

For veg my 4' 4 lamp T5 HO lights are the equal of my 400 MH. For flower the MH is better (unless you are growing some very low to the ground plants).

Comparing a small wattage MH to a small wattage T5 I think they are comparable.

I am currently comparing a 220W t5 to my old 250w lumatek with MH.

Pro's
* larger foot print
* wattage is equal per square foot
* seems to be about 12" of proper penetration
* great for clones and small mom's
* bulbs run fairly cool

con's
* Not good for growing tree's or large plants
* still generates quite a bit of heat

250w MH
Pro's
* grows nice plants with nice branches

Con's
* Smaller foot print
* Single centralized light source, and in horizontal scenario behind the bulb doesn't get premium light
* 2 heat sources, ballast and bulb
* generates quite a bit of heat
* hot bulbs must be farther from plants

I think under 250w comparison they come in pretty equal but I dont think 1000W t5 would have shit on 1000W MH. But there is exceptions to every rule and Im sure there is ways to use them vertically or some shit where they might compare watt for watt peeps out there can do some amazing things.

Used to be a MH fan, used them all the way to harvest. Then I put up a test budroom and ran lights and combo's of just about everything. Lost 2 crops in the process, violet and blue does not slow stretch much, but it stressed the plants to hermie. HPS made sick huge plants. CMH plants were the healthiest small bud plants I've ever seen. T5 just did not give much growth at all, T8's were not ever considered for main lights.

My conclusion came to using them all.

The big budroom has 3 HPS, 2 CMH, 2 MH, and 3 T8 fixtures for sidelighting.
Yellowing on sativa's is nonexistant, yellowing on indica is greatly reduced compared to straight HPS. Indica's must be used to cloudy days or something.

Small budroom is 2 CMH surrounded by 4 T5 fixtures as sidelights.
Its seems using full spectrum it is just a matter of putting enough light to the plant. These plants are HEALTHY, strong, very little stretch, and the colas are long and filling well.
The yield will not be what the big budroom gets as HPS is like us taking amphetamine, goes like a cheetah but sickens from the overload. With the T8 sidelights set by the HPS the lower buds are growing at the rate the top buds are. The HPS effect carries through the whole plant, even the bottom's that are only getting light from the T8's. Whatever the yellow/orange spike is triggering affects the entire plant. I could probably use less HPS than I do and still get the same growth using other supplements. Need to get a few good grows done before spending more money and time on testing. :kitty:

You'll want to use all of the 5'x5' with a 1K... no question, no doubt about it. Which bulb(s) is the question! ;-)

So you think I should connect the nutrient reservoir from outside of the tent? The bulb i'm working with right now is a 600w HPS for flowering. Thinking about getting another one of these, I like the results in flowering.
Also considering getting a couple 400 w MH bulbs for veg in this tent. See the ballast I have you can turn the wattage down.

Before I was just vegging on the side in a small area with one 4' 4 bulb t5 light. Had decent results, but now I'm trying to maximize harvests.

i use t5's for early veg and rooting but i prefer to use 430 or 600 hps for moms because t5's make the strains that i grow hard to clone with node spacing almost nonexistent while the hps's make nice leggy clones

Im using 2 of those 600 hps. I just pulled 11oz from 2 plants in a 5x5. The first 30 days I used super lumen and then turned it back to normal.

Walkin closet. 2 600w bulbs. Veged for 4 weeks in 10g pots. Nutrients used PBP,Liquid Karma,PK 13/14 MSS X SB BX1 from head seeds. I had 3 plants but the 3rd was a runt and only got 1.5oz from that one. so the total from the 3 plants was 12.5oz. Not sure what happened to the 3rd plant the buds where just as good :).

I would run the rez from outside the tent if possible. More space for plants, and easier to keep the rez cool, I would think.
If you already have one 600, I'd just add another one, as long as they can be properly cooled. 1200 watts in a 5x5, could yield well over a lb., depending on strain, of course.
