Breeding with early showing traits

Hi all,

for those of us microgrowing, the idea of breeding is an exercise in masochism. it's a numbers game, and with a small space it is impossible to support a worthy population to select from.

But if the selection can be done within the first to third week of a seedlings life, it's possible to put a lot of seeds to work. I would like to use this thread to gather what is Possible when selecting early. And it might be useful to note traits that only show late.

polyploidy - / Trifoliate
I grew a strain a while ago that showed three cotyledons and the trait continued all through flowering, and produced very well. Well it popped up again in some f2 seeds I had, and I am considering trying to work with this into some interesting pure sativa strains to increase production. it showed one seedling in about 15 sprouts, which means future seeds could be planted say 100 at a time and 5-10 trifoliate seedlings could be selected to continue.

resistance to waterlogging
When I had some space many years ago I grew hydro, using DWC and Lucas formula. the plants floated in tubs on styrofoam slabs, and the water was oxygenated using oxygen releasing devices (oxygenators for fish tanks). However, I wasn't able to visit my room too often, and the plants could sit for days when no oxygen was being added to the water, just a pump circulating the water. A lot of plants couldn't handle it. But there was one plant that just kept trucking... it grew air roots, in the styrofoam and just outgrew everything else. I crossed it with a few strains and those plants are phenomenal at handling waterlogged pots, and cloning.

Have any traits that could be added? please contribute!

I Kinda take a similar approach to to my breeding/pollen chucking outside, as i can only have a small number of plants if any thing shows the slightest hint of a weakness or undesirable it culled.

the judging of a seedling's future growth (unless it's polyploid with extra leaves) is probably a 'magic' art. at least that's the way it seems to me.

I grow sativa outdoors and each autumn throw my seeds (from a best sex altered) in the mulch under a fruit tree. when it rains I always seem to get good germination. then the seedlings for planting need to be chosen.
I can't say HOW I choose ... because I don't really know ... it's an intuitive thing ... except I look for an umbrella shape when the seedling has abot 6 - 9 leaves on it. most seem to turn out female. in fact last season I achieved 100% female from too many seedlings to mention here. (no fresh seeds this last season.)

I 've been doing this with the same seed for fifteen years and the quality of the smoke just keeps on getting better (or I 'm getting more sensitive. or feeble.).

breeding for traits? that's too ambitious and complex for me!

You should check out the unofficial MJ breeding manual, Marijuana Botany by R.C Clarke it has some really great info.
