Hey guys, need a little help! This flying bastard startled me when I was watering today, he flew out at my hand, thus the reason he (she?) is squished in the pics! It has some kind of long stinger? on it, and proceded to try to stick me with it for many minutes after it was dead. It looks like a fungus gnat up close, but I have a few of those too, and this thing was way bigger, and didnt fly around like a bumbling idiot. I tried looking around at pics, i dont think its a winged root aphid (from pics those looked a lot more beetle like) and unless its the queen freak gnat it seems way too big to me! preditory wasp hopfully maybe? Please help, plants are just starting to get their bud on and I dont need any bug troubles now! :thank you:

I'd have to call it a dead bug.

I'd have to call it a dead bug.

That looks like one of the good guys to me.
Perhaps an Ichneumon wasp?

A friendly flier.
And that looks more like an ovipositor than a stinger.
She wasn't tryin' to sting.
Jus' tryin' to get you to baby-sit while she croaked.

Aloha,

thanks weezard, I hope youre right, although this one isnt colorful at all, and the ovipositor was maybe only as long as her body... maybe a different variety?

thanks paulo, its putting my mind to ease a bit that the first two ids didnt call it out as the harbringer of crazy bug infestation!!

My guess as to why you have had good luck with the bugs thus far is because you are very conscious about them. If that was a wasp I would be more worried about my own well being, hate wasps. Bee's I will tolerate because they are a important breed and all, but wasps get no love. Good luck man.

that's ignant bullfrog!

lots of mean looking wasps actually have no idea how to sting you. they are built for parasitizing insects and they have not evolved to use the stinger that way.

damn you beat me to it.when i had greenhouses i used to watch em attack the caterpillars and lay their eggs. some of those tomato cats got big and the wasps were welcome.

Looks like a wasp from that pic. Chances are it's predatory, but some are pollen collectors. You could look at it two ways....one being that it's cool you have predators on the hunt, the other being that if there's a wasp in there hunting...what's he hunting?

It was said in jest, just as I don't think there are "ninja spider mites". Take a chill pill. I actually don't kill anything unless necessary. If I see a wasp nest around the house I do spray. Mouse gets in the house I kill. (tried to trap before but those guys are smart) I would never kill if I didn't have to and I would never go hunting or anything like that. Hell, I don't even squash spiders. I bring them outside on a nice bush or a cannabis plant. Also, I don't think all wasps are alike. I have watched the nature Chanel and seen all about how they get mid evil on caterpillars. I just don't want them to sting me was the point. And yes I know not all wasps can't sting humans. I am a wuss when it comes to bees in general. (wasps) Peace and love brother.

But thanks for the "edumacation man!"

Sarcasm font lacking, other cues will do.

We do have color.

I use navy when not swigging kegs.

And switch to 'lectric blue when yanking legs or busting eggs. :D
