Oldhaole your plants look great, much respect to ya! LSY try laying chicken wire down so the ground 5 feet or so is covered around your plant. No groundhog experience here, just my bad chickens always scratch and pick the compost out around my plants. The wire put a stop to it. They still shit on my porch everyday though its pissin me off....

Thanks man, i did this to keep my cat from digging up my Dog after suddenlly dieing. The cat just luved that dog as much as me, but i couldnt just let the cat dig him up, i would have freaked out.

The cat will still crawl under the screen and lay on top of him, but cant do anymore digging.

Thanks for the idea, because it is a good one. A friend gave me a few that were close to 3' and hasn't been touched so il make sure they go in bigger next year:dance013:

Thanks again:thank you:

liken what i see haole guy!
the shovel reference is pretty slick

^^^this kinda made me laugh, because it reminded me of a post some ignorant dude made a while back concerning going to hawaii to find seeds, and that he'd just strap a back pack on use his snifferr and head for the hills to procure seeds.... like nothing would happen to him hahahaha

i dont think peeps really know about the grabbers here... they may look sweet and homely, but shit, they bite a little.
I grew up on Oahu. Went on a boyscout trip where they took us out at night blindfolded and dropped us off and we had to use our compus to find our way back. This was in the Pali. A hog run me and another boy up a tree. Spent six hours in that tree before she gave up and split.

You may be right OH... sugar prices went up 113% in June!

I am making a move from the east coast mainland to the big island upcountry Kilauea area this fall. I am legal qualified so will be doing my thing. I was wondering the best way to go on fairly new flows. Bust a hole out of the lava and put soil in or build containers on top? I can see a drainage problem with a hole in the lava but the area I will be at around 4000 feet gets less than 10 inches of rain during growing season and snow some years. Plus is the sulfur both in ground and air a problem?

Shit....Don't Have a Title

Shit....Don't Have a Title

ijim....I have no experience planting on new lava. Some BI growers check this thread out and they have more experience than me in that department. I will be happy to give that question a shot, but if the BI guys correct me, please listen to them.

Lava is more porus than you would think. Drainage won't be a problem. The area may have a kipuka on it. This is a place where the lava went around a hill, leaving an island of good soil behind surrounded by new lava.

An old flow may have some vegitation on it so that's the best place to hide plants. Either in pots or on a hole, Brand new black lava would be a bitch to grow on. I'd use containers, but I'm sure that daytime will get hot. If you had a pile of maney to burn, you could crush the lava down, and bring good topsoil in. If you are going the legal route, bring in enough soil for seven giant holes. Maximise your yield, go crazy.

Four thousand feet is too low for snow. Lowest I've seen it come down to is about 7,000 ft. and that was a long time ago. If you are directly downwind from the volcano, the gasses and acid rain will burn the crap out of your plants. Doesn't happen often, but it can happen.

Festivus....not only has the price of sugar skyrocketed, but HC&S is in talks with the Dept of defense to find out what feedstock has the best yield. The military want's HC&S to make biofuel for Oahu's fuel needs.

Also if you know the pattern of replanting fields, this year HC&S is planting fallow marginal land above Kihei. Not the actions of a company going out of business. I personaly think sugar has another decade...or more....One can hope.

One last thought before I call it a night. Today was hot, with strong winds. Some 20-25 MPH gusts. I figured I would have to fix busted branches all over after the wind slowed. No need. The tying worked like a peach. Dropped a single bottom branch fron hole 10, and tied it back with no problems.

Life is good....for now.

OH, I hope you're right about HC&S's future... so many Maui families have plantation roots.

I've gone indoors for the most part, still do outdoor for seeds and pollen collection. Got tired of my neighbor's kid always trying to rip my girls. You would laugh at my outdoor setup... barbed wire and all, looks like MCCC lol.

Acquired aclimated strains twice... the first one I let slip away not knowing it was an old school outdoor Maui strain. I could veg her at 14 hours of light and put her out without her throwing pistils until the fall. The other was my "Kuipo" hawaiian strain from Molokai.

I've now come to understand just how valuable an acclimated strain is, and the huge time investment it takes to create these strains.

Props to you and anyone else doing the outdoor thing! It's by no means easy

Hey OH. Lovin your thread here. Any ideas on how I could get some acclimated strains over here on east side of BI. Either clones or seed. I have been growing some WW that I got from a seed company but all my clones go directly to flower when I put them out.
I've also been struggeling with mold on the WW. I have a perpetual grow and Depending on how much rain and humidity we have here in Puna, Some plants I'm lucky to harvest 50% of premature bud. Luckily I also am growing some Pohaberry that I got a clone of and it does not have the same molding problems as WW but it also goes directly to flower when put out. I wish we had some dispenseries over here.
Have you heard of any inflormal cannabis cups here on the islands. I would love to help organize one for the BI.
Thanks OH. Your grows are truly insperational.

Welcome to the Machine...

Welcome to the Machine...

Festivus... What you do indoors is infinitely harder than what I do outside.

Aclimated strains save many steps and yield far more than strains fresh off the boat. I do most of my breeding over short season. The plants get ready quick, and you can grow a bunch and select the traits you want.

The Jack Herer took all of one generation for me to aclimate. Duck soup. Rodney will take a couple of years. Maybe less if I can get a lot growing over winter. Time will tell.

No matter how long it takes, a large seed bank...gotta have 'em stashed. You go to the hastle, make them count. Save everything. Even lines you think won't go anywhere.

Canni...your best bet would be to get away from the clones. Seeds only. Some aclimated seeds are as far away as a couple of bag seeds . Another trick is to cross your WW with already aclimated strains. I crossed WW with Bloodweed and got a great aclimated strain out of the deal. Same with Rodney and Kush.

Hawaii growers are like crabs in a bucket. When one makes it to the top the others gang up and pull him back down. I don't see a cup happening here anytime soon. Most Hawaii growers like to keep their cards face down, close to the vest. Why give your work to the competion, and they call it theirs? Thanks for playing our game, we have some worthless parting gifts for you....sucker.

The mold in the WW is because we have had a wet trades. Nothing you can do except keep planting and hope for a streak of great weather. It will happen. Thai is WPM and Mold resistant. Look in that direction.

Headiez...TY. I want to blow these up too. :jump:

Bongbong...you set me up. TY. I too went to the North Shore today. Only we were checking plants in the cane. Said we were going to do it last week, got sidetracked, but sure busted my hump today. Checked five patches, took a smoking, cane cuts all over, burned my thigh on the hot pipe. The fields are older and harder to move around in. Walk a couple of miles in a cane field and you pay the price.

I'm fuckin' old....but EVERYTHING was there. Like I though, there were a few males, but no fertile girls. Biggest was 8 ft. Went thru about 60 holes. No wammies, a girl in every hole

If they fly green harvest, on schedule, this week they will be up tomorrow. Instead of breaking the cane back I took scisors with me and just cut leaves, There were also a bunch of vines, and other junk on them too. Got a few males, but I will have to go back. A few have yet to declare.

The wet North Shore weather we have had did the trick. Plenty of water means big plants in the cane. This is starting to show true potential. It could be a big year. Again time will tell.

Took some shitty pics of the girls...they're alive! They look good too. This motivates me to get back out there and stay on top of them. I still have more than 400 to find...oh happy day.

At the house we got a short hard rain. I spread bloodmeal around the houseplants so the rain helped them to the next jump.

Cool beans man :dance013:

Looks nice in the cane bro:) i was wondering how tall the cane gets? Around here people plant in the corn, but to many together and it always gets snagged by the choppers.

Its great you have some idea when the choppers fly, i should have wrote down the date when the choppers flew over my grow:dunno: then maybe i would have an idea this year.

Thanks for the show bro, looks great as always:thank you:

Pretty symptoms?

Pretty symptoms?

So I guess I shouldn't expect lavender pistils? :frown:

If you really want pinkies, ju's let yer PH drift 'til ya lock out Phosphorus.

More plainly: If you do see the lavender, it's time to check your run-off PH.

Let it ride, and they will go to pink, then blood red.

Had 2 of Rod's kidz outdoors.
The one in hydro, started to "lavend", so I swapped out the nute bucket and she turned a whiter shade of pale straight away.
smile.gif

The sistah in da soil was not as easy to fix, so I jus' let her slide.
I'll post some pics.
She is very colorful. Striking, even.
A wicked, painted, hussy.
And, sadly, about half as potent, med-wise, as her sistah! :(

Maybe it's the dog shit and deer blood diet? I'll be damned if it doesn't seem to be working tho! :pimp3:

F'nA! those girls are HUGE!!!!! if any outdoor plant that I grow gets HALF that size before she's DONE she's gonna blow cover! all I can say is :tiphat:

I originally posted this info in Horseguys album.
Then got to thinkin', "How will CW know it's there?"

And yer Grafting thread is so, worth following.
No be so 'umble. :D

BAH! I know me some BS when I see it,....

and I don't!

Thanks for the headsup, yes I'd have seen it in Horsey's album too, but the interjection into OH's playground is more fun! :D :blowbubbles:

PH huh? well now that sux, because I try to keep mine between 6.0-6.3 inbound, be damned if I measure runoff tho, and yes, all my babies are in soil, so no I can't make rapid corrections.

In all reality tho, lavender/red/pink/purple with green pokadots pistils are all the same color of brown once they've been dried. ;)

I'd rather have the large potent dry/cured bud than the small colorful live bud any day!

Yes, I am so cheap that I've got 1 stake to lable 2 seedlings!:shucks:

I,ve often mentioned the extreme highs and lows that go along with doing this. Yesterday I was stoked. The glance into the future gave me...a positive feeling, to say the least.

This afternoon the clouds started piling up around the hill. I ran outside, and covered the Headband, and got ready for what I thought was going to be a light rain like yesterday. Three hours later more than an inch and a half had fallen. I had big branches down on the ground. Spent until dark tying things back as best I could.

Now comes the interesting part. Did it work? Everything is plenty wet, nothing I can do except hope I did a good job. There was some major damage. A few of these were on the way to bud...OH well.

Fortunatly I have the entire gulch tied up well and that all came through. I will know if I'm screwed tomorrow.

Bummer.

LSY... An individual stalk of sugarcane will get about 10 ft tall, then fall over. Then it does that a few more times. Creating a tangle of cane stalks that are a bitch to get thru. When I planted them I was on straight rows. Now the cane is older and finding them is a job in itself.

Headband...I have one of your namesake going outside. Will take it soon and burn a fattie with Grey.

Weez...if I understand lavender hairs not as stoney. White hairs are good. Mine are all still white.

And that is a Rodney plant. I think the Thai would be problems grown inside. Unless you graft some short finishing strains to it.

Play with that...

Bongbong...welcome to the rock. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
