ants in soil (not mites)anybody why?

hi,i'm posting this for someone else.....they walked in their grow room the other day to be comfronted by an army of ants.these was not mites or anything like that....ants.....has anybody ever heard of this before and can they harm your plants.they was in the room,in the soil....everywhere.he says that hes got rid of them now by moving to a differant room and flushing like a mad man.......has anybody got any idea why this happened...i know hes grew in there before and never had a problem

some ants are attracted to the moisture in yr pots. some may eat some of the goodies like meat meal if it's too fresh (hope that's not the issue).
before you buy heavy chems to rid the ants first try putting borax powder around the base of the pots. it's safe and cheap and ants hate it.

Some ants farm aphids. I'm not saying this is going on in your garden, but you might want to check.

if they are actual ants tell him to go to his local hardware store and buy those little ant motels, they are like a dollar for 3 little discs, put them in the grow and the problem should be solved. if they are much smaller they could be the larval stage of fungus gnats, does he have any tiny black bugs flying around?
