I use the clear cup in the red cup method. Works great!! I have seriously been considering looking into clear orchid pots for my next size up to continue watching the development of the root system.

Red and blue makes green.:)
I thought you had to use these if you grew. You mean there are people that don't use these cups? I drill 3 holes in the bottom of them with a 5/16" drill bit. They never get clogged that way.

Like everyone else, I use both the reds and blues. I also have a bunch of the light green ones with the square bottoms, but i never see them in the stores anymore. Oh yeah, i use the smaller clear ones for cloning too.

I use the 9 oz solo party cups for most of my clones. If they get real big in the cloner, then I go for the 18 oz beer cups.

The reds producse the best finished product.. lol thats what I use. no one seems to have said they like the clear cups? I've always heard to never use clear containers but I use a few clear cups and the plants seem to do just the same and the cool part is you can watch the roots grow.

Light (and a few more things) kills roots and/or stuns them.

Clear. I think that people saying that light damages roots read that on a stoner board and no where else. Oddly enough, those same people will go on about the benefits of smart pots. Go figure

You my friend are someone totally confused.

You should forget everything you "know"
(or should I say merely retained?) about plant basics...and start from the beginning.
Then, and only then, you might get lucky and start seeing some....light!
;)

And I mean this in a totally honest, none derogatory way. :)

Did anyone catch the neat little contraception this guy is growing with???

How long do you veg in those cups assuming you're finishing the grow in them?

Hey, yah the little contraption is actually three 20 space shoe hangers.
They cost $1 at the local dollar store I cut them down so that they are only as tall as the cups and then poked a well placed hole in the bottom of each "pocket" as you water excess water drains to the pocket below and so on until it reaches the floor drain.

I use them for starting large numbers of outdoor plants, I put them out around 4 weeks veg weather dependent. I have however flowered a few in the cups. 3 weeks would be the longest I'd let them go in veg for such a dense set up. The real problem is that towards the end of flower if you aren't running an automated watering system (I am) they will suck those cups dry fast as hell.

About to be flipped.

Not to shabby for a beer cup.

Thats what I always thought but I have used some clear plastic cups side by side with red plastic cups and both clones rooted great and I never see any signs of a problem with the plants in clear cups.. try using a couple of clear cups some time. I really dig being able to watch the roots grow. in fact the clear cups help me time my transplants just right. you can always tell if a plant in a clear cup is root bound or not.

Bzzt...wrong. No it doesn't. I grow plants in clear 1 gallon milk jugs hanging right beside (vertical grow) a 1k bulb, roots fully exposed, and it doesn't hurt a thing. Stop repeating this stupid bullshit rumor because it's totally false.

.......

Now if you were doing the same thing you are doing now but without exposing the outer section of the roots to light.
;)

Imagine how much that would improve your results!

strainhunter,
If you're going to make a claim not based on science, don't you owe it to your readers to provide data or point them to a study supporting your claim? I'm open to being wrong. But time and again people claim that plants roots are damaged by light with no supporting evidence.
