What's new

cloning gel or rooting powder?

I have a bottle of green light rooting hormone from lowes I got last year, it worked just fine, I also recently was gifted a bottle of olivia's cloning gel.
the powder has 1% actual rooting hormone--indole 3 butyric acid

and olivia's gel has only trace amounts of of NPK and doesn't mention anything about
rooting hormones present??
N .08%
P .15%
K .09%

I thought the rooting/propagation gel was suppose to have the I3B acid?
So would it be ok/worthwhile to mix some powdered hormone in with the gel?
or dip the cut in powder then the gel?

whats the advantage of using the gel without the rooting hormone? and vice versa with the gel with only enhanced NPK

due to state labeling compliance they sometimes don't bother paying for the testing required to find the hormones in their product even though they're there.

I like powders more personally, you can see where its been applied and there is less cross contamination between the cuts

powder for me, gel keeps the stem to moist imho, and powder has fungicide too. also cheaper

Been told on more than one occassion that the gels go ineffective if they are exposed to heat... and have used Clonex before where it seemed nothing special happened.

Dip N Grow... hella cheap, always seems to work.

I have tried different things, but I always end up going back to using nothing. Seems to work just fine, the way I clone, the gels just build up a slimy residue that gets stuck in my salt shakers. It's a bitch to get out, and I don't think those cuts root any faster in my setup..could be the setup, but that's the way I do.

I have tried RootTech, Olivias, DM Replicator (no hormones) and Dip n Grow, they all have (with the exception of DM) varying amounts of Indole3 Butyric acid. Dip n Grow says that making their mix too strong is actually detrimental, so they recommend lower percentages for semi-hardwood and hardwood cuttings.

ok, so olivia's gel does have I3B acid/rooting hormone,
its just not listed on the label.
I was going to mix some of the powder with the gel if not and see how that worked.

Ive used the powder with very good success before and happen to have the gel and wanted to give it a go but I'd rather have the rooting hormone in it and wondered why they would make it that way.

Ive also read too much in concentration isn't good also, its something like over 3% I3B acid??

Not to threadjack but do any of you have experience with ever using just straight kelp/seaweed extract instead of the gels and powders? I'm interested in keeping everything entirely organic.

Powder. Gel rots stems.
Have used none,too.
But I find the resulting roots to be thin and frail.

Dip N Grow 1:20 dilution gives me the best results. Better than cloneX IME

I use the Shultz Take Root powerder that the sell at Home Depot because it works and is cheap and easy to source.

I clone in a coco/perlite mix (10-15% perlite). I have Clonex, Root-tone powder, and Green Light power. Always seem to reach for the Clonex. I've never had trouble with cuts rotting. I also use 2 drops/gal of Superthrive when i wet my mix. Makes for some FAT roots. Sometimes it seems like the superthrive might slow em down a day or two, but the roots i get with it are as big as a #2 pencil lead alot of times. 2-3" long. 10-12 days.I've also read one can make gel with powder using ky and a lil water and that to much I3B will hinder rooting.

How about you try none, no Clonex, no powder, no bottom heat.

Just keep the air temps stable at 24C or 75F.

And you get this.

I have used green light for a solid two years because the price was right...I am now going to try azos nitrogen fixing bacteria because I have been looking for an organic source. Green light works and it is cheap. What are your needs? If you can take clones then water should be enough. Hormones just speed the process along imo. Don't spend too much whatever you do.

i have tested both in my current run for cuts

and i have found that they both work very well with both i get 90-95%

i will use the powder instead of clonex from now on cuz it does the same job just as good for much much much less money
