Roots exposed to light? Rockwool

Gstone

Member
I have a table I am running ebb and flow style with rockwool cubes 6x6. My question is are the plants being affected badly by the roots popping out of the bottom and being exposed to light? Some are growing a little bit of algae on them. If so what should I do to fix the problem for this crop. The next I will be using coco mat under the rockwool.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If roots are still wet, they continue to grow.If they get dry after some hours they will die.
Light is not good for roots but my experience tells me they continue to grow even with light on them, the important thing is to not let'em dry.

Algae are not dangerous, but they could affect pH and suck nutes.Just cover the roots with something and they will not grow anymore.
If you have a lot of algae you could disinfect the roots using a bit of H2O2 (3,6% or similar diluition) and a napkin ;)

Hope it helps

Nope there gonna be fine just let the roots stay wet, gonna be ur hardest part is without over watering those 6's. I got rid of the coco mats and stared using those plastic cloning trays a few forum topics down. has to be the cheapest and most effective mat to protect roots and get my Rw to dry faster. 3 days on them and all that flatten roots under ur cube are now blowing up fuzzy white and thick. also i can water the roots as much as they can take and not kill my girl. lovn life right now

Don't use H202, it will kill all your beneficials.

It's not too late to put the coco mats in, it can't hurt.

If you won't use the coco mats, try covering them in mylar.

using it locally, with a piece of paper soaked in H2O2, on affected roots, it will not kill the whole bacteria colony. It can't.

Btw...H202 is good to disinfect not to sterilize and kill everything ;)

H2O2 will actually improve your biological life it increases oxygen which roots and beneficial microlife thrive on. Just don't go pouring high concentrations of 35% H2O2 on them and you should be fine :)

If you're worried about issues with root rot etc., you can apply some MycoStop and Rootshield WP to your plants and do just fine.

same. 5 days in and the roots have grown into a 2 inch furry mat. Im able to flood those neat little air pockets under the tray crazy often. and my growth on top of the block is noticeably faster. If i ever see the bottom of my flood table again ill be surprised.
