POS eBay Carbon Filters...

So a few months ago I got a 6" carbon filter from eBay for fairly cheap, what a mistake. I'm 5 weeks into flowering and this bitch isn't working so well.

Anyone have this problem? I guess it's just a "no-name" of sorts.

What has been the most reliable carbon filters you've used?

go to a hydro store and you can get the bulk carbon from them. picked up 35 lbs myself.

Can my Filter be refilled?
Technically the filter can be re-filled, but it is not a good idea to self-fill the filters at all, the reason for this is that Can-Filters uses an industrial shaker with timed intervals and a dust extraction system, to ensure a packed carbon bed .This eliminates the possibility of preferred air channels through the filter, because as we all know, air does not wait in line to go through a filter it finds the path of least resistance and crowds in. So if you tried packing the filter yourself, as soon as you got it as full as you think you could get it, attached a fan and turned it on, the fan would vibrate the carbon, and over time the carbon would settle and you would be left with air gaps all over the place presenting the air with channels to flow through the filter and possibly leave untreated.

My friends got two of those and it still wasn't enough. They had one sucking and blowing into the attic and another one just running open and filtering .Their whole house smelled - even on the front porch....not sure what it really needed for the garage grow they were doing. And suggestions? They had to cut early and so far haven't started another grow.

If the filter has carbon and ALL air being sucked by your fan is being pulled through said carbon it will work. scrubbers aren't rocket science.

Are you pushing or pulling through the carbon?
Are you using intake fans?
How long has the fan been connected? What cfm vs filter rating? Is the carbon just used up?
Is your intake sized to achieve negative pressure in your grow?
Are you sure there are no leaks between the filter and the fan in a duct or at the connections?
Are you using another fan to cool lights? Pushing or pulling?

Make sure everything else is 100% dialed before you go blaming the filter. I would hate to see you go through all of that if all it needs is a few strips of duct tape or a couple of holes caulked. If you have other ways for smell to leave your grow then the filter doesn't matter.

Kind of common knowledge but for those who might not be aware,,

Carbon filters don't work in high humidity. Maybe now that those thick summer days are here it's not working for you.

Or it's an ebay pos. CAN filters are made in canada. It feels awesome buying something made in north america. More than worth the cost.

I use can filters. They are not refillable when you buy them but I drill out the rivet and replace them with sheet metal screws. The correct size fan needs to be used. If your fan is to small/big they wont work properly no mater what brand you have.

that cheap filter might actually work much better if you change out the carbon. especially if they used the pelletized kind. seems like not too much else could be wrong, unless it's just not airtight.

I could not get my Phresh filter apart, cause they make the rivets recessed, where you can not drill them out. My current cheapy filter can be drilled out, and will.

Pushing air is the biggest help I found. Once I set up the fan to push the filtered air through the hoods the filter worked about 90% better.

High humidity will kill or reduce effectiveness too for sure.

Thanks for the reply!

- I'm pulling the air through the filter
- No intake fans, the negative pressure from the exhaust fan is drawing fresh air in through a vent.
- I believe the fan is 300-400cfm? Enough to create lots of negative pressure!
- I hope the carbon isnt used up, it's only been used for the past 12 weeks.
- No leaks in the grow room, it's fully insulated with a double layer of vapor barrier.

That could be a possibility but I thought this happens around 70-80% humidity?
My daytime humidity is around 45-55% and nighttime humidity is around 60-63%

Maybe I should think about adding a dehumidifier rather than a new can filter?

I'll probably go the Can Filter brand with a matching fan, eventually. But for the time being I need to make this one last for at leased another run or two.
