Cannabis pollination range

Hi

As you know, cannabis is an air pollinator. A friend of mine has a few plants of different strains and would like to avoid cross-pollination. Hence, the question: what is the range of male pollen: is it, say, 100 yards, or 1000, or maybe a few miles?

A few seeds for a plant wouldn't be a problem, the goal is to avoid massive pollination. I would appreciate people sharing their experience in this respect.

Also, I wonder if a small or bigger "barrier" of trees is a substantial factor here.

Welcome to icmag Kong! Large releases of pollen can travel vast distances but my experience is that, as long as you don't mind a bit of seed, smaller amounts can be controlled with a bit of distance (as little as a few yards) and intervening vegetation, especially if the wind is low. On the other hand, I had to abandon a site that was about 2 miles from a hemp farm because of massive unwanted pollination.

It's a bit of a crap shoot really...

Unless you live in an area where everyone grows Cannabis on their farms and in their gardens i wouldn't worry about it at all. Your friend is more likely to pollinate his/her own flowers than for pollen to come from elsewhere. The world is a harsh environment for pollen.

I vaguely remember this old story in High Times when I was reading it back in the late 70's. They could estimate the potential harvest in Morocco by the pollen count they were seeing in Spain. Don't know if that pollen was still viable but interesting story and stuck with me.

I personally have seen several seeds pop up in fem's that were 100-200 yrds from the male..not many but just enuff to make a few seeds on accident that are now nice growing fem's

Thank you for all replies.

Your friend is more likely to pollinate his/her own flowers than for pollen to come from elsewhere.

That's exactly the problem.

From my experience, at low distance, 10-20 yards, pollination is 100%, even with vegetation in between.

pollen can travel hundreds of miles but disperses over that distance. my plants always have half a dozen seeds in them.

i bet pollen could travel thousands of miles and given the right weather conditions (cloudy and windy for example) and still be viable.i guess it all depends on the weather. if the wind is strong enougf ,pollen could probably be carried around the world.
