What's new

bugs on my roots. Rx please!

these pictures are from my veg side. i'm using a 76 site aero system with a 40 gallon res, hydroton, t5 lights, and straight lucas nutes @ 0-5-10 (800ppm@ .7) and h2o2 added per ozgrowa's formula.

the bugs were not visible two days ago. they are only on the roots. a few have climbed through the net pots onto the tops of my trays, but they die there, probably due to the hot shot strips i have hanging. in case the color is not clear, the fuckers are definitely red in hue.

in two days, they have made short work of the hairs on my roots. what are they? what is the fix?

You could dump the existing solution and just run water and stronger h2o2 for about 24 hours and it should clear up.

150ml per gallon for 3%
30ml per gallon for 15%
15ml per gallon for 35%

Not offering this as the end all solution though since others will probably recommend more effective chemicals, but h2o2 tends to work fairly well imo and its something you already have on hand.

damn thats rare, ive never heard or even seen bugs growing on roots in hydro systems. learn something new every day.

Toes.

i've read where imidacloprid/merit works well while in veg. Since I'm not a huge chemical fan... beneficial nematodes work too.

im not a chemical fan either.
anyone heard of a product called pyreth-it?
it's 6% pyretherin and 60% piperonyl butoxide.
i've gotten two recommends on it from the local homeys.
wondering what the kids in cyberspace have to say.

researching merit and eagle now.

Toes.

not the pyreth-it but I use ferti-lome triple action that has those two ingredients and clarified hydrophobic extract of neem... I read where the piperonyl butoxide is a sassafras derivative and it shouldn't be used around pregnant or nursing women or any children for that matter... because it makes us 3.9% more dumb... or something like that. I have had good results though. I spray at night and rinse in the morning. haven't burned any plants yet... unlike that fucking Safer's leaf burning soap shit.

You've got a healthy outbreak of root aphids... don't fuck around... they'll take your crop to shit.

Imid... be it Bayer Complete or Tree & Shrub or Merit... just hit em before it gets worse.

ok. i think i've got this thing under control now. treated my res with 2.5ml/gallon of 35% h2o2 and 2ml/gallon of pyreth-it yesterday. in less than 24 hours, the aphids have all but disappeared. i'm going to leave that brew in my res until next nute change (middle of next week), and then replace it with a systemic (merit) just to keep the little bastards at bay.

ANYONE KNOW THE RIGHT DILUTION RATIO FOR MERIT 75 IN A HYDRO SYSTEM?

NOTE: DO NOT GET PYRETHERIN AND PIPERONYL BUTOXIDE ON YOUR SKIN IF IT CAN BE AT ALL AVOIDED. I DID. THE TINGLE IN MY FINGERTIPS LETS ME KNOW IT'S WORKING. THE SUBSEQUENT NUMBNESS DOWN MY ARM LETS ME KNOW I AM PROBABLY FUCT FOR LIFE.

hey all!

in the wake of a nasty root aphid infestation:
https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread....33#post4527833

my rez temp also shot up to the high 70's for a day and a half.
now i've got the rot.

i use gh micro, and i unerstand that some of the discoloration is from staining, but this is hardly normal.

the aphids have been nuked and the temp is stable at around 70˚.
my best idea now is to cut out the most affected parts of the root mass and to do a h2o2 root dunk (i'm in aero) and then load up on the hygrozyme to eat out what rot remains.

re: merit 75

re: merit 75

as it turns out, bayer (who makes merit 75) sells an apparently identical product called criterion. it's water soluble imid @ 75%, but it only costs half as much as merit. go figure.

i bought some, but it looks like the pyretherin did the trick, so i'm going to wait and watch for another 3 weeks before applying the systemic.

root damage is managed as well now. thanks to everyone for your help!

One time run through, then drain it, then rinse it, then drain again... ready for a new rez. Maybe give it a 20 minute application & you should be fine.
