my friend recently hooked me up with about 60-70 seeds from an old hippy he knows, the guy claims they are from the 70s and they were stored properly, they are various colors and sizes so i figured, what do i have to lose? i need some advice as far as germinating 40 year old seeds, thanks in advance

Wow that's some serious old skool dank. Do you know anything at all about them or the hippy? Like as in are they likely to be quality meds? Hope you start a thread man I'd definitely follow along.

As far as germinating, I don't think the process is gonna change too much. You might want to soak them for a day in some lukewarm water. Aside from that I think you know what to do. Good luck man I will be rooting for you.

What is "properly stored"? That could be just in a jar in the cupboard or something. If they were stored in a freezer for 40 years then I think you will get some to germ.

Good luck man :tiphat:.

couldnt find anything, i did a search of just "acid" and didnt find it either, any other ideas?

if you have a good amount drop a few in a shot glass, ive heard thisis a good way to get old seeds sprouted, they will open and sink dup all water but enough to cover thebottom gots to be fast in planting them.

Sterilize the seed using 30% ETOH for 30 seconds, and then rinse with autoclalved sterile water 5 times for 15 seconds each rinse.

Plant the seeds using sterile technique on 1/2 strength MS medium containing 10 g/L sucrose, 5.5 g/L agar, pH 6.8, @ 25 degrees Celcius under florescent light for 16 h per day.

If they have a shot, and you can manage to get them into the Petri dishes/jars using sterile technique, this should bring them to life.

Good luck,

Unless they were stored in mineral oil, or frozen for the whole time, you are out of luck.

From what I've seen, for seeds stored at room temp in air:

<5yrs=good as new

>7yrs= rate starts dropping off

>10yrs= rate plummets

>15yrs= good luck

If you get any of these to grow it would be pretty amazing. If they had been in the fridge or freezer for all these years (would be hard to believe) you would have a much better chance. Good luck to you brother! :good:

i did see a thread on another site that used some kelp extract in the water
claimed it is good technique for popping old seeds, dunno if it's true, but sounded like it might be

Good luck- got around 100-125 seeds from around 1990. The seeds were kept in film canisters in a cool spot the whole time - never above 60* I have tried many germ methods - with no success - warming the seeds, cold seeds, roughing the seeds with sandpaper, paper towels, soil, rapid rooters, rockwoool, coco. Some have popped then died. I have around 25 left, and it makes me sick because I know these would be pure fire, just can't get one to pop.
