Smartpot Transplant.....

M

masterchef

Going from 15 gal to 100gal. Vegged for 2 weeks in 1 gallon plastic then for about 3 weeks in the 15smartie. Am I safe just planting the 15 into the 100? Or should I cut away the fabric?

Pro's and Con's for both?

THanks

I routinely transplant 2 and 3 gallon smart pots into 5 gallon by allowing the soil to dry almost completely, than rolling the sides down all the way and gently lifting the fabric away from the bottom...This saves me money as I am not wasting a smart pot by cutting it away, though the root tips that have grown threw the fabric will have broken off, but these will grow back. I have done this for several grows, and the plants recover nicely from the transplant, though I do allow a 2-3 week adjustment period in their new homes before sending them off to flower.

You could do this with the 15 gallon smart pot, but to be honest if your going to be going into 100 gallons your gonna have a hell of a plant, I would just be tempted to cut the bottom off and suffer the loss of a smart pot.

if i had invested enough to transplant into 100 gallon pots, i'd cut the bottom off and not disrupt the plants momentum..

I'm asking maybe there is a good reason, but if the roots can grow right through the bag (and do) why would cut the bag?
