staggering lights in flower

Read a post long ago about someone growing trees and used a staggered approach: a few of the lights on the edges came on for a few hours, then a few more in the middle, and so on. Then they went off after a few hours until the ones on the edge went off too.

What would happen if you have a 3.5ft X 7ft space with two 1k lights overhead. Could you run one light over half, then switch over to the other light to light the other side. Every 6 hours one goes off, the other comes on. they get 6 hours direct and 6 hours indirect. Would the quantity be reduced by 50% or something lower?

Got to work around the heat, can't run 2.4k anymore for a while :frown:

Would you be better off going with a flip-flop set up instead? Or a couple of 600's? Am no botanist or physicist, but I would think lighting just half a grow for half the time would effectively reduce your yield by half. :2cents:

I'm thinking I know the light system you speak of.

halogen 600w on at 0730 off at 0815. on again at 1930 off at 2030.
yellow/blue 2000w on at 0800 off at 2000.
ceramic 4000k 800w on at 1000 off at 1800.

I won't get into the theories behind that, but the extra effort did not give an equivalent extra return.

Read an article by a guy who worked for grodan and also did greenhouse consulting . He said he would have 12 lights and turn half off in a zig zag pattern for 2 hours at a time . Claimed almost no loss in yield

This guy had pictures of a big show. The theory was that plants only needed the HIGH intensity for a few hours in the middle of 12/12. He had no loss of yield, but did have a big loss of electrical usage. They were all the same 1k hps lights, like 12 of them. 1/4 of them would come on for 3 hours, then 1/4 more, and so on until they were all on, then 1/4 of them would go off, then another 1/4 three hours later...

But using that train of thought, could you do it with only two lights? They would have 6 hours direct light, then 6 indirect. The lights would be right next to each other, over their own 3.5 X 3.5 canopy...

Somebody here that seemed genuine and knowledgeable said that extra far red light coming on, I think it was a half hour before and a half hour after lights out would boost growth, he said that's what professional greenhouses do. Not for weed, but it would probably apply to weed.
