How Do You Prevent/Treat Tick Bites

I grew up in tick and rattlesnake country and learned as soon as I could walk how to avoid em. But if I had a buck for every tick I've found on myself I could take a nice vacation.

Dress like a cowboy, there was a reason they dressed the way they did.
Wear high-top socks, a T-shirt tucked in, long sleeve over shirts with cuffs buttoned, a bandanna around your neck (yeah like the cowboys used to do), and a hat with a full brim, and boots or Gators over pant legs.

Then check yourself in the shower and in front of a mirror or have somebody else check you after being in the bush.

Ticks hang out on overhanging limbs and are brushed off when critters brush against it. Then they begin crawling to soft, warm fresh like behind your ears, under the arms, back of knees, groin area and lower back where clothing doesn't rub a lot and disturb em. If you peal off your outer layer of clothing and check yourself before getting into your car you will eliminate most of em. Then another thorough check immediately upon getting home.

Now that knot is likely the head of the tick. Them fuckers bury their head into the flesh and it will usually separate if you just pull the body off and infects.

I always carry a small pocket knife with a really pointy blade to dig the head out if they get burrowed in. But it usually takes em awhile to get past your clothing and to a soft spot, so I seldom have to dig em out.
Anyway, when driving in the woods where brush overgrows the roads, keep windows up and arms inside. Walking on trails avoid going through thick brush and brushing against limbs if possible.

I usually find a couple ticks every time I go out, and get a bite or two every year but catch em before they can burrow. It's just all part of the woods like squirrels or bears, annoying but if you pay attention they're rather harmless.

Definitely use pyretherin/permethrin/resrethrin (which was stated by bubble_bobble). Use anything ending in "ethrin" can be used in foggers as long as it's diluter, bring a propane fogger in with you along with your chemicals. You can spray a 100 sqft area with a quarter cup of this stuff. Works great, kills mosquitos, wasps, everything. Just make sure your grow isn't too close to any animal/critter nests.

Don't dust yourself with diatomaceous earth, that is silly. You'll end up getting cancer, if you ever read warnings on diatomaceous earth it claims inhalation effects to be the same as ASBESTOS!

Seriously, this underneath clothing might be handy. You could wear it on top but you wouldn't win any fashion contests.

Hahaha...
I spent about $140 for a great Akubra Cattleman hat about 20 years ago from David Morgan Co.
Most people have a bandanna and shirt. I like the Columbia Backcountry shirts cause they are super light breathable ripstop nylon. They cost about $80 but worth every penny. I've had 3 of em for years, my favorite shirts in the summer, they're really tough and won't ever wear out.

I've had my Gaiters probably 20 years, they never wear out and are irreplaceable in the bush or even for biking or horseback. Kinda spendy though for a good pair, I think I paid in the neighborhood of $100. I don't remember anymore but Google em.

It might sound like a bit to spend on outdoor wear but wtf, if you're spending time in the woods then it's worth it and my gear is like new and I've used it hard for 20 years, so it's worth every dime I spent.

Of course you don't have to spend the money I did, there are far cheaper brands. They might not last as well but will still keep ticks and spiders from dropping down the back of your neck.
A pardner of mine always wears a hoody and silk scarf and tapes his pantlegs. He gets along okay but the tape restricts his movements and the hoody gets pretty hot, so he has to slow down all the time.

Seriously though, while I was looking for the links for my previous post I seen that they have convertible pant/shorts of the same material so I ordered just 3 pair of them.
Totally cool! I bought a pair when I bought my shirts but lost em somehow over the years.

Check it out. Only $85 a pair. I thought I remembered paying more than that back then.

read some interesting stuff about tackling Ticks & Fleas with 'Linalool', apparantly effective too. check that out man! G'Luck with the bites, ballsack cant be a good place to get em.
Disco lmao"!

Shit kills Borg & their eggs which first got my attention with this stuff! i havnt tried or sure if its viable for you, but maybe immediate area treatment. Covering up best way to go!(I wonder if rubbing a mild solution on the skin would do anything??)

btw, i used to get em off the dogs when i was a kid all the time, a quick burn with a cig & off they drop 9 times outta 10(youwannt them to let go, not pop the fkers), pulling them off even twisting is tricky, leave head/legs etc in skin & wound gets infected.
Horrible fookin things!

you can also remove ticks easier to put some vaseline over them with a cotton swab........this actually suffocates the tick and it will release easier.....it definitly works....good luck

lyme disease is carried by deer ticks, they are tiny compared to regular ticks. but yeah other ticks can carry all kinda other unpleasantness.

it is NOT only carried by deer ticks. having grown up in the state where Lyme was "discovered" (LOL!) i have become all too familiar with it.

GO GET TESTED!!!!!!

if you are pulling ticks off you after each visit.. brother, get to a Dr. I DO want to scare you, because Lyme is not a joke. I cannot tell you how many friends/family members have been permanently F'd because of this fucking gov't creation. My best friend has had an I.V. pic line in his chest/arm for over 3 years now. My other friends younger brother had to recently withdraw from Brown because he contracted one of the worst cases of Neuro. Lyme i have ever seen. He has been bed ridden for a year, with constant migraine, brain-splitting headaches & body pain, unable to speak/move/barely eat b.c the pain is so great.

Many Dr.s will deny it even exists, the rest will most likely mis-diagnose you for many many years. And if you are lucky enough to afford a Lyme Dr that isnt bullshit, good luck affording the antibiotics and medication you will need to 'attemp' a recovery. Lyme is a huge huge problem in this country, contracted yearly at epidemic rates, but not given the time of day that it 100% should be given. Be careful brother..

I spray down my jeans, shirt, and socks with pyrethrin. I tuck the jeans into the socks and spray any exposed parts of my skin with 98% deet. When I'm hiking into my spot I stop often to check my pantlegs for ticks and brush them off. This method has been working very well. Before when I was just using deet, I was getting 3-6 ticks every time I hiked in. Now I rarely even see one.

whoa gotta clear some things up:

ticks can't burrow into you. It is not possible - you are confusing it with a chigger.

turning counter-clockwise does nothing. Here is how to get a tick out with just your fingernails if you have to:

start by pinching the skin around the tick to make a little mound of flesh with the tick in the center. use your fingernails, not the pads or tips of your fingers
slowly work your fingernails together by scraping along your skin, keeping them on the skin at all times. it should feel like a pinch and a scrape.
bring your fingernails together under the tick's mouth and pull.

if you do it wrong, your nails will lose contact with the skin and you will be grabbing the tick by the body, so start over.

finally, put the tick in child proof pill bottle or ziplock that you brought with you, and freeze when you get home.

if you have tweezers, it's the same deal but you use the tweezers instead of your nails. you want to pinch and scrape along the skin so you get between the mouth and your skin.

here are two diagrams on removing a tick. I like the first one better, because the tweezers are closer to the skin, which means less chance of breaking the head in two.

Ticks are hell here until it gets hot. I wear shorts. And keep checking my legs while I am walking. I found with long pants they just climb up to your belt line or you cant feel them until they are on the neck or bite. On my bare legs I can see and feel them.

LMAO! I'm already self conscience as it is. I ride a mountain bike to and from that plot. I get some strange looks already when riding in jeans and long shirt. I can't imagine the reactions I'd get wearing that garb. When I go back, I'm going to bring my gear for the woods and leaving it there so I can change.

I'm fairly well covered but do need to start taping my collar, pant legs and wrists.

If you spot a tick on you smother the area in vaseline all over the tick etc that will make the tick pull his head out as will think its suffercating then it can be removed, the danger of pulling a tick off while its heads inside you is the bite can get infected due to head still being inside you. I cannot advise how to repel them though but have a few in the past so I know not to just pull them off.

I just had to go grab some anti-biotics from a tick bite I still got down under from camping over Memorial Day weekend. Doc said general rule of thumb if your in ticks for more than 24 hrs its a good idea to start some sort of anti-biotic. That lyme disease is no joke I wasn't worried till I started reading more about it. Especially round lakes millions of deer ticks.

If they can sling mud I can ride em, lol. Great find with the convertibles.

Might even be able to roust a few of the local Brahmas back inside the gate but I'd be slingin' sheet w/ the mud. Besides, dressed like that.. wouldn't need the bike. I could prolly just wave my arms.:)

The convertible pants/shorts work well, when worn in pants mode. I wear them while hiking and the ticks crawling up your legs get stuck in the little flap of fabric that covers the zippers. It's like a built in tick trap.

I got me one of these suits

http://www.rynoskin.com/

They're made especially for ticks. Not a single bite since I started wearing it.

I also wear regular clothes over it sprayed with pyrethrin. There's no way in hell I'm gonna get my blood sucked.
