What's new

equipping a new veg room, how the heck should i cool it?

so we're in the process of equipping a new grow show. 9x13 room (with 8ft ceilings) which will be dedicated to cloning. we're 215 compliant and will be providing clones to patients. shooting for 100 babies a week with 1-2 weeks of veg (we'll see whats good) in 16oz cups of coco. this means 100 cuts in the aeros (probably more for safety), 100 clones in early veg, 100 clones in late veg, and mothers ready to pop 100 cuts every week.

so far in the room we've got two 4ft 8 bulb T5 fixtures, and will be adding two 1000w MH very shortly. mothers are still teens right now, but will be going into 5gallon bucket RDWC system under the MHs horizontal and eventually probably switch to bare bulb if we decide to veg the moms out tree style. got one 75 site aero cloner ready, and building another very soon, those will most likely just have a few T8 fixtures over them. the T5s will be going over the 16oz cup ladies and we are probably going to have to add a couple more of those 4ft 8 bulb suckers depending on how things go.

i know this is going to be toasty! i've done shows before with air cooled HPS but this is my biggest yet and my first time having a nice dedicated space. we framed everything out ourselves and its looking great!

my first thought was to air-cool the MH lights and push exhaust out the roof (we have a 12" vent to the sky). the problem i am realizing with that is twofold - we're going to have to sort out an intake that will allow us to move a serious amount of air back into the room (the other external outside the room is only a 4" vent), and we're going tohave to use a pretty big fan which is going to be a pain to muffle.

my second thought was to get an appropriately sized window type AC unit. what i am unsure about is how that will work any better. my instinct is that we're not fixing anything by doing that - the same amount of heat will have to be moved off the back side of the AC - so it seems like that idea is no better than air cooling. am i wrong about that?

i've done tons of reading but haven't seen anyone running into this specific issue. what can y'all tell me?

Whats the space like outside the room? Is this in an open warehouse or what? You framed out the whole room right? You can't just cycle in air from the outside of it? Or stick an ac straight through the wall and cycle on an exhaust fan for 15 mins every hour or so for some fresh co2? You could pick up a portable ac unit even and use the duct from that to go to your 12" exhaust and just have a passive intake, there are a lot of options but without a layout its hard for anyone to give you some advice. Need some more info...

Depending on how long you plan on keeping your mothers going you may want to do standalone dwc.. in the long term in dwc I'm sure it would be difficult to keep every plants roots clean and once one gets infected it'll spread throughout your whole system. Drip system may be a better bet. I would ask around, but hopefully someone with more experience keeping moms around for extended periods of time can chime it.

the place is a 1600ft^2 warehouse (with 10ft ceilings). half of it is framed out into rooms/offices, and the other half is open. i'd say that gives us 8000ft^3 to theoretically dump heat into. is there a way to figure out the temp rise if i were dumping the heat into that volume, and maybe slowly venting it? i was afraid that dumping heat into the open shop would make things get *real* hot given that we're going to be on 18-24hrs of light.

as far as mothers - we've got about 25 strains in the room right now. my thought was to cycle strains out. so for a month or two, we have them in the big RDWC, and then after a couple months take them out and put something different in. i see your point about having them on shared nutes, but i was hoping it wouldnt be an issue if we are doing things right. is it that big of a risk? do you think 5gal buckets of coco on drippers would allow me to run trees like i'm wanting, and get the kind of growth i need?
