I wanted to spread the word about a plant native to the northeast that can be helpful the the guerilla/stealth outdoor grower: Rosa palustris, the swamp rose.

The swamp likes wet feet, drought, sun, shade, damp, dry, getting trimmed, getting left alone, and getting eaten by native butterfly larvae.

it can make an imposing hedge, and is so resistant to disease, you don't have to remove canes to make an open center.

3-4 bushes with good sun will make enough rose hips for all your ascorbic acid needs.

and i'm sure the fun does not stop there.

cant believe no one else posted in here, ive been doing the same with our wild native roses along with other thorny plants. living fence = best deer fence EVER.

quite fast, and they spread, and they don't mind being divided. control/shaping involves cutting back the shoots it sends out.

I acquired my first specimens for free from an online ad put up by a homeowner not up to the job of keeping it under control. They were not feeding or caring for it in any way. I drove up, dug it up, threw it in a tarp and did some errands, leaving it in the hot august sun for quite some time. I planted them at my leisure and they went on like nothing had happened.

tony C - multiflora is an asian variety. not helpful for north american butterflies.

I loooooooove roses! Got trays of rugosa petals drying now, the super heady aroma fills the whole house at least as strong as stinky ganj. Ive been using the petals in the car as a security defence, cant smell joints over a handfulla rosa...

my experience with the deer is they LOVE eating rose bushes in the fall... maybe they would choose that over ganj..

anyone using rose in soils or sprays? do plants benefit from vit c too??

Awesomeness! I don't grow CannaBlossoms OutDoor (friggin' yet), but something like this would be lovely for my Garden O' Eden. I did Transplant some Thorny RoseBush dealys out in the yard - - but I take it that's a whole different BallGame.

thats almost better, by the time you need the outdoor spot. the roses will be full grown and the hedge impenetrable to deer except for your door.
