Roots growing through drain hole

Not sure what to do here, I'm assuming it would be best to just cut them off and push what is left back in.

I'm using 5 gallon buckets with a bunch of small holes drilled in for draining. These Oahu grown pakalolo plants have been growing a steady 1-2" a day since I switched to flowering, which is good and bad--thinking I should have used 5 gallon pots instead of 5 gallon buckets =P

leave it alone. if it's not getting enough water out in the open air it will prune itself. won't hurt the plant.

desperately seeking susan.

5 gal is 5 gal. how much water goes in? any coming out?
These buckets are way bigger than the 5 gallon pots though. I watered today and didn't get any drainage...need more watering tools. Each of the 4 in orange buckets (one is Hollands Hope) got lil under 1/2 gallon of water and the soil was fairly dry but not crusty. I've been watering about twice a week, takes forever for the soil to dry out.

My main concern is root rot I guess.

If you're getting drainage you shouldn't get rot unless you're leaving runoff in trays etc. That might explain the rather profuse roots outside the pot.

I'm giving a 5-gal tub of potting soil a gallon of water at a time. Little to no runoff when I pick up the tub and judge the water content. Crusty tops aren't necessarily indicative of dry medium. You could have considerable moisture beneath the dry surface. The deeper your pots, the more water (even though the top gets very dry.)

But judging from the pics, you're obviously not over watering. Nice job.

If I remember right a #5 pot is 4.02 gallons.

I'm going to guess 4 zips each on the two bigger ones and 2-3 on the other three. Nice work. I wouldn't worry about the root thing.

If you think they are gonna hit the roof perhaps training an "S" curve into the main cola branch will help.

If you want "air-pruning" try 5 gallon (or larger/smaller depending on your needs) SmartPots, they will Air prune themselves and the root ball will get much better airation.

I love my Smart-Pots (hug)..I used to grow in those buckets until I found SM's got an extra ounce or MORE per plant when I switched...just my experience.

Good luck and grow on bro!

The small one on the floor I'm not expecting to yield much at all. Its never looked too healthy and I made the epic mistake of feeding it bloom nutes before it had started to bloom. I'm actually half tempted to just get rid of it. If it starts growing better in a week or so I may keep it.

I actually have some 3 gallon aerated nursery pots. They have few ridges where the pot gets smaller and there are drain holes along the ridges. I haven't wanted to mess with smart pots yet cause I'm afraid I'd end up tossing them every time.

Holds about 5 gallons has a nice flat bottom and with that graphic I just couldn't pass up the poor man's smart pot. It worked well. Seams are a bit weak don't overstuff.
