Converting to bare bulb.

So this is probably some really newb shit but I can't find any threads or info detailing this online.

I've set up a new vertical room and currently have a bare bulb 400w MH running. As the canopy thickens I'm gonna need more wattage and so I've been deciding which of my current lights I want to switch to bare bulb. All my other lights (five 1kw hps, two 400w mh) are in hoods (couple of xtrasun hoods, a raptor hood/etc.) with reflectors, my issue is that after attempting to take apart a couple of them, I find the lamp cords/electrical/etc. to be 'permanently' attached to the hood, or at least I'm not smart enough to disassemble them, perhaps cause I'm scared of breaking stuff.

Can anyone give me some tips or just a quick rundown on the do's and dont's of taking apart lights and removing from hoods?

Any help is much appreciated. :thank you:

Keep the hoods together so you can give them away or sell them. Most are not made to come apart. You have to buy sockets.

On most hoods the socket is riveted to the hood. On htg hoods they are screwed together, and can safely be removed.

I was told electrical supply stores sell mogul sockets and obviously wire. But, hydro shops sell sockets you can buy with cord attached, ballast adapter etc. I'm actually glad you brought this up. I'd like to know what most people are using.

I also have a 1kw xtrasun reflector that has all the wiring permanently attached.
I had to bend a part of it to unscrew one of the bolts and break off 2 rivets.
I screwed on a 90 angle piece of metal, so i can hang it without any stress on the wires. If you want, i can get some pics when i get home.
It was rather easy. Or you can just buy it as mentioned, it will probably be safer, but i'm a lil broke. I think it's like 30 at my local hydro store, probably cheaper online.

All you want is an E40 Mogul fitting, they're on Ebay for about $8

OMG..hey whatever works ..at least you are focused!

Good luck dude looking forward to your Vertically aligned grow!

Hehe, I mainly grow outdoor, so it was an experiment that proved worth doing. It worked so much better than horizontal nothing was lost by the modification, yet I did pick up 4 mogul sockets at an electrical shop going out of business a week later...
