This is my first ever plant and I just cut my first branch that was about 60/40 cloudy to clear trichomes

it smells like fresh cut grass or something ( but not weed )

it is northernlights strain

i have it hanging so it can dry , after it drys will the grass smell go away and smell like actual weed ?

or did i do something wrong

all i did was cut the branch and trimmed it up some then i hung it

sorry if the pic is a little blurry

my clones stink really bad with 0 flowers... So..

its the genetics and or it was cut way too soon... but even then if you have good genetics to start with... it will taste and smell good soaking wet.

the only trick to make it smell right... is... genetics

how long into flower was it?

about 8 1/2 to 9 weeks

What kind of water was used ?

Tap water is sort of no-no..picks up the chlorine in the weed.

yes tap water , but i fixed the ph first to between 6.0 and neutral

yes the wet grassy smell will go away, don't take it off the line to soon.

so it will just go away as it drys ?

iv been reading and watching youtube vids

so im thinking about letting her hang for about 2 weeks

should i dry longer then that ?

the flowering time on the site i got the n.l seeds from said 7 to 10 weeks

its been about 8 1/2 to 9 weeks

i just took the one branch , the trics are about 60 / 40 cloudy to clear

the rest im waiting to get more cloudy with amber

i took this one at 60 / 40 cloudy to clear because i want to feel the high at this stage and see what its like

and hopefully in a few days to a week their will be more amber on her so i can get that high also

this will be my first time smoking something that is not bagseed so im a little anxious lol

iv been giving her nothing but ph water for the past 3 to 4 weeks
( no nutes at all )

Thanks to all of you for your quick replies :thank you:

sounds like you got it all covered, you may have started the flush a little early maybe, hitting the girls with water when they maybe needed a BIG feed and boost to bring the most out of them...whats the rest of the plant still flowering smell like now?
Don't forget you got the rest of your life to dial it all in....grow hard!

Just make sure you cure it for a good three weeks and it should smell more like weed. Some strains don't have any flavor until they're cured - seems genetic.

its normal...my stinkiest lemoniest fuel funk OG kush smells wet when first pulled...give her a good 4-5 days hanging, when the branches start to stiffen up, chop and trim, and let the nugs dry for another couple days...then into bags or jars for breathing...a proper 2-3 week cure and the smell will bust through the bag. after a month its even more ridiculous...

if it still smells like hay your growing technique or the genetics are to blame....

Nope you cut it way to early. Where did you hear you could harvest a plant with clear trichs? You can certainly harvest a plant whenever you want, however for the plant to be really done, the trichs should be mostly CLOUDY, with a few turning amber and only a very few left clear, if any (less than 2%?).

Most people decide how much amber they want.... me personally I dont like amber trichs unless its nighttime. Definetly need them to be cloudy though.

Their are more cloudy trichomes then clear

As i stated in my first post its 60 / 40 , 60% cloudy 40% clear

i know you get different highs from how the trics are and i wanted to experience them both

from what iv read , the 60 / 40 will give me a body narcotic high

and the 50/50 cloudy / amber will sedate me

i dont know for sure im just going by what iv read from google

i defiantly want the sedated feeling more then the body narcotic high , that's why i only did the one branch for the body narcotic high

and now im just waiting for the rest of her to get more amber on her , she has just a few ( here and their ) but that's it

idk how long it takes for the trichomes to start turning from clear to cloudy to amber

iv asked on google but it did not really provide me with the answers

im hoping it only takes a few days for them to go from cloudy to getting a little amber on them

i check them everyday with my scope , its only 60x and i can see them ok but i wish i could see them better lol

hell the tip of my scope is sticky from me checking them everyday haha

so im gonna do as Yes4prop215 said and hopefully the weed smell will still come in

the plant itself has a little sweet smell to her but she not giving off that strong aroma that i here people say they get with their plants

Its NorthernLights maybe that is how it does , i really do not know

this is my first grow and im just happy i made it this far before i broke down and asked a question lol

Thanks for all your replies

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...this is my layman's version of what has been explained to me...

You're plants, when wet, are still full of plenty of chlorophyll etc that needs to dissipate or air-out from the leaves/buds. Plant can really only air-out from places that have been cut or trimmed... so wherever you made a trim on some leaf, that opens a cut for things (green-smelling things) to be exposed to air. Once they dry out, the smells and fragrances of the strain will begin to come out. Aside from smudging trichs, this is one of the big complaints about machine trimmers - they give your bud a chlorophyll bath with all those exposed cuts and the tumbling of the bud.

I always figured this makes sense, because if you're growing a strain that smells very good then that smell is obvious all through flower. Then, you chop it, trim it, and hang it, and you get that grass-clipping smell.... only for the beautiful fragrances to return after the bud has dried and began curing.

Also, like others said, strains vary... my GDP always has an intoxicating fragrance throughout flower/dry/cure, while my Blue Sat, SLH will both go through that grass-phase in the dry and have their true smell return.

Anybody disagree? I know my methods of drying and curing work, I just don't want to keep passing on bad info to my buddies who don't use this site ;)

2 simple things.

either whatever you fed the plant wasnt properly flushed before cutting or its just the way the strain smells.

some strains just cant shake the grass smell no matter how well they are cured, but usually those type of strains have more fragrance when broken up from the inside instead.

so its not a bad thing, unless you didnt flush. if you are using nothing but organics in minimal amounts no need to worry about flushing but if you are someone who has put a lot of nutrients to work in your plant you definitely will want to plan a flush before harvest.

i never grown NL but from what ive read she is supposed to be a light smeller ...

Yeah NL is not a big smeller freshly cut. Give it about two weeks in the jar and you will be amazed how much the smell will start to come out.

Another thing to consider is you are probably a little desensitized to how it smells since you have most likely been smelling her a lot throughout the grow. Totally normal and something we sometimes forget as growers that that can happen. I bet if you took that bud to one of your friends that doesn't grow and asked him if this smells "dank" he would say "hell yeah!" Just give it a little time in the jar curing and it will still smell like you're wanting soon enough.
