Soil or Hydro, what do you think?

Ganja D

I wanted to start a thread to get the opinions from the growers of IC. I am currently growing indoors both in soil and hydro(flood and drain). I'm doing some tests and comparing the results and the way certain strains grow in soil compared to hydroponics.
Hydro does have it's advantages but my buds just don't get as frosty and greasy as they do in soil. I'm not the most experienced with hydro,I've just done 1 crop and am finishing my second shortly.
Even though hydro is way less work and easier I still prefer growing in soil. My plants just look and smell better.
Anyways,I wanted to start this thread to get some opinions from you guys. Do you prefer soil or hydro and why?
Also for you hydro guys, how can I get more resin. My buds look great but they just don't put out trichomes like my soil grows of the same strains grown at the same time.
Currently growing Mr.Nice,Killer Queen Redux, and Headband in hydro. Growing Headband,KQR,SSSDH,Mr.Nice,Double Strawberry Diesel,Blue Dream, and 2 phenos of Chemdog X Sour Diesel in soil.

I wanted to add a poll but can't figure out how.

Hydro nutrients are usually stronger in Nitro then soil. like 3-2-5 for hydro and 1-4-5 for soil. Mixing is much higher in hydro then soil. 30 mls vs 15. This might be why your not seeing the same results. What are your dosages hydro vs soil??

This thread could go huge. I mainly do hydro ebb/flow SOG grows and am happy with the results. My mother plants are kept in soil though. As I have not done a lot of soil grows I anticipate finding this very interesting.

With soil,I always mix it up with feedings and water. Sometimes I blast em with nutes till they tell me to back off, then go half strength till they tell me their hungry. Feeding also depends on the objective of the grow. For my smoke I go real light,if not I can get pretty heavy with nutes. I can get more personal with the plants.
In hydro I only change the res's once a week and top off as needed. I've been afraid to get the ppms to high in the hydro, since I don't have as much experience with it. ppm's are between 1000 and 1250 during flowering. Pretty simple, just floranova and a few other things. Anyone got any tips as far as other products. Thinking of adding silica and cal mag to the next round.

i was thinking about trying out some coco in the near future....but for now il stick to soil

You might want to post this in Hydro forum. I have not tried any hydro the closes I got was a 50/50 mix of coco/soil. But I grew it like it was soil. I love my Organic soil grows I wont be changing anytime soon. I use my interpretation of the KISS method.

I enjoy growing in soil for the simplicity. Each has it's advantage and disadvantage. In the end does that really matter? That is up to you to decide. One thing I have noticed over the years is that my soil grown plants have never lacked in smelliness or tastiness.

Organic soils baby! Loads of it per plant.

All I do is water them sometimes with extra veg/flower fertiliser. 1 bottle at a time. Easy on the nutes.

The newb I am likes to focus more on environmenal issues considering my climate. Maybe one day I'll do a hyghdro round..

I think soil is a perfect support for lameasses and newbs!

I like organic soil(less) for the ease, elegance, and simplicity. I don't use bottled fertilizers, don't do any measuring, and use less than 4 gallons of water a week in my 400w indoor garden. I have never tried hydo so I can't provide a quality comparison.

Hydro is more for someone who wants to maximize yield. Well, that is once you realize the best hydro method is with HPA + TAG. Combining these, allows you to micromanage nutrient delivery, which must be fine-tuned in order to grow roots covered in root hairs. They are the key to max yield, and are very illusive.

And to whomever said you use more in hydro is all wet (npi). With TAG + HPA ppms in late veg < 600; in late flower < 900. Why so low? The nutes are being delivered in tiny absorbable amounts roughly every 3 minutes, 24/7. hth
