Safest fertilizer for young plants...

Wow there is a lot of great info in this forum. I am looking through threads so forgive me for asking a amateur question. Little overwhelmed

My plant is only a week old and being that it is the "last man standing" of eight I am scared to do anything but water. (others were dug up by some animal)

I have built a cage around plant so no worries there and I have sprinkled cedar saw dust and very fine chunks around plant as well.

I have a bag of 10-10-10. When can I use this?...or can I use this? And what amount?

I am interested in homemade ferts and nuts. So any suggestions on a safe recipe for a very young plant? Or should I wait until there are multiple nodes?

For the first month a bag of compost is more than enough.

As long as the soil drains well its the safest option I know. And its dirt cheap.

That's what I've been reading but there is such a debate among growers when it comes to feeding. I just wanted to be certain. A really dumb question...do I just sprinkle around plant? And approximately how long before I start to see a second node develop?

Dude, relax. up to 2 nodes it can grow in straight water. It doesn't need anything right now.
WAIT, be patient. the second node will come up. if not today - tomorrow. if not tomorrow- next week. You can't do anything to make it quicker, and if you can you probably shouldn't.

you mix the compost in with the local soil, but if you've already planted your plant in the ground mix it with the soil around your plant so when it grows roots that far it'll have food.

you could also just put it on top of the soil and water it into the soil.

I assume that you have a guerrilla grow. One thing you might consider is looking into using local plants as fertilizers. There are many plants that can be turned into fertilizers in the field or shredded and mulched around plants to provide a slow release of nutrients. For example, fermented nettle supposedly makes an awesome veg fertilizers. If you are interested in this sort of thing there is a sticky on it in the "organic soil" forum. There is also a thread on Nettle Tea in specific.

haha thanks Fonzee. I guess I'm a little nervous. I'll just let nature do it's thing.

Pinecone, using plants from your surroundings...very interesting. I'm gonna check that out

Don't get it eaten \ stolen, flooded or dried crisp and you'll get a harvest.
The more you add the more you'r able to fuck up.
