New digital electric meter

Power company went and replaced my meter, I was wondering if anyone could tell me about this new one. I'm assuming that they can monitor your usage much closer and tell how much power you are using and when. Should I be worried about the amount of lights I'm running? Was told that if I was going to run more than 4k a flip flop is probably a good idea so as to not to raise any eyebrows. I know that the power companies usually just want you to pay the bill and be done with it, but I can't help worrying about scrutiny a bit more than before. I'm taking a small break over the summer months regardless but if anyone who knows what they are talking about can shed some light on the subject it would be very much appreciated.

ahhh, you got one of the new smart meters. I heard the same about the flip-flop . Best to run your lights all the time , so they don't notice the large 12 hour swings. My boy was just saying that is what his friends up there do.

I don;t know though . I'd think the medical boom would be a huge boom for them . If I was an elec comp exec, I would be stoked about indoor grows. More money in their pocket . No way would I use that data to find grows . WHy would they want to make their customer base smaller ?? If the DEA subpoenaed that info , that would be a different story. Then , I would think your already fucked anyway though .

I've heard people locking there gate to prevent these meters from being installed.... I've also heard of people locking their gates making it difficult to read their meters.

The old school way is via an ERT meter. You can request for one to be installed. Stands for Electronically Radio transmitted to the meter dude on the street. He never has to access your property. The new ones are cellular and they won't need the meter dude anymore....

I think if you pay your bill, you're OK. Edison prefers your higher bills. Why would they report you and loose out on that income !?!

absolutely everyone is getting those meters. my thought is this will only hurt us if we are already being looked into... another thing I read on the power co webpage is that they wont be reading the meters from base until september, but that they will have a usage record from whenever it was hooked up. BUT Ive also run into people saying that if you are out of cell phone range they wont be able to send your meter info anyway.

ALSO ...IF you had caught the meter changer before he changed your meter you could have told him not to do it. I think if you pay for the change you can have it put back. Even though some think its a myth many people are affected by EMF's. restless leg syndrome is caused by EMFs (as is cancer, but...) Many people are saying they dont want the new meter because they dont trust the readout. So you could call and ask for an old meter back. If you dare.

the flip box could mask the 12/12... But maybe the new meters can read what kind of appliance you're running EDIT- there are also smart appliances to go with the smart meters, like i have heard they make SMART digital ballasts which greenhouses can control through the smart meter

we're just gonna rock it and see what happens. its really no ones business what we run for electric, we could be med, we could be farmers doing a greenhouse, they wont know until they check it out and like i said i dont think theyll check unless theyre already lookin

Thanks for the quick answers, you guys are awesome. My instincts tell me just stay under 99, pay the bill, and don't worry so much... but you know how being a grower can make your imagination run wild.

Was thinking of going to flip flop route this fall anyways...

Better to be overly paranoid , then lax bro! See way to many people who got a MM card that never grew before . They have no idea of the paranoia or risks as they never grew "illegally" . They get their card and think they can do whatever .....
