I have one on retainer, I sleep much better as a result. I also wouldn't take a plea if I can afford the trial, because after seeing what he can do in person, he would be fun to watch do the full dance. The retainer was $420, btw.

HAhA...seriously?

What is a lawyer going to say that you cant to get you out of it?

Here's something:

See ya for T-off on Saturday, judge.

Find a GOOD attorney in your area and put a $2500-5k retainer down

Im sorry but it sounds to me like your getting jacked. A good lawyer that knows cannabis cases well, will usually charge abut $5000 for a retainer.

The retainer is so that the lawyer does not have to get money from you, in the event you get into trouble, he goes right to work. $420 will not get you farther than a conversation. Sad, but true.

Because according to American Jurisprudence, anyone who hires a lawyer is considered incompetent.
CONTEXT dipshit!

What would 'incompetent' mean during a trial procedure???

Shall we think about it a moment, before you go telling people to 'represent themselves'?
Guess what?, they did that!
Now they are sitting in Jail or on Bond.

If I am representing myself and I get up and yell "Fuck you, you lying son of a bitch!", wouldn't a 'competent' person be in contempt of court?

Google Omar Figueroa, he's one of the top pot lawyers in California, and has founded or chairs several pro-pot foundations. If he wanted 10 times his retainer I would have given it to him, but that's all he charges. Going to court costs extra, but it always does.

Wow this is some of the worst advice I have ever seen given.. But then again anyone stupid enough to listen to someone telling them to represent themselves deserves what is coming to him

Isnt that $420 charge for a consultation and not an actual retainer?

I guess in technical terms he is right. Meaning that if you ever do get in trouble he is guaranteeing he will rep you even though it will probably cost you out the ass.

I guess when most people (myself included) think of a retainer we think I will pay you this $5-$10k up front and if I get in trouble you will rep me with no or very further minimal costs.

But I almost like your way better. Its a lot smaller up front cost and it guarantees that you will be repped by a competent attn. I'm guessing he can't turn down your case once you have him on that "retainer." If you ever do get into a situation where you need legal help it will cost you a lot more than if you had an attn on a more traditional retainer, but the chances that you get caught are probably small assuming you stay safe..

cant believe theres so many naive people in here recommending they represent themselves in a felony cultivation or felony distribution case...

unbelievable!! good luck representing yourself and then sitting in jail for years because you dont have the lawyers hookups....

a good lawyer knows the DA or prosecutors personally and can negociate with them personally...good luck trying to even talk to the DA by yourself..

an even better lawyer knows the judge personally as well...

do you guys even realize how the system works??

the only time i represent myself in court is for speeding tickets of misdeameanor petty cases like my trespassing ticket....anything else a lawyer will save your ass...i was facing three counts of graffiti vandalism and my lawyer got the whole case dropped because her reputation preceded her and she was able to pick apart the case with the DA and make him realize the futility of it....i garuntee you couldnt have done that with a few weeks worth of BAR reading...

some of the advice in here is dangerous...if you are growing/selling illegaly PUT ASIDE MONEY FOR A GOOD FUCKING LAWYER...

on the plus side when you get locked up because you represented yourself in court...you can spend the 5-10k you saved for your prison allowance..

I could not, in good conscience, ever suggest people become slaves or submit to false authorities. Sorry to disappoint some, but the legal system is not too big to stand up against, learn on your own, and represent yourself. Some of you sound like little children who are still sucking their thumbs, wearing diapers, and being breastfed.

When you grow up, you'll possibly learn how to protect your rights by studying law. If you are scared of learning law, then don't break any of them, by all means.

Don't walk across red lights, don't run any stop signs, and don't smoke any more pot, you're not old or mature enough to be doing that yet.

By the time our founding fathers were in high school, they could represent themselves in court. Sorry, but some of you are just plain slaves and you always will be, and nothing will ever help you to set yourselves free.

I won't be one of those encouraging you to give up your rights or freedoms. I won't be one of the sheepish slaves, or the blinded fools who suggest you bend over and take it up the ass from corporations. I'll leave that to the people here who suggest you get a lawyer.

A retainer fee, is just an approximation for initial fees to show up at the Police Station for any questioning, and to appear with you at Arraignment-- Anything after that, will have to be paid by you--
And to those saying it is better to Rep yourself...you are very wrong--
As already stated...you will be lost-- There is much, much more to Court, than telling somebody your story-- You wouldn't know what writs or motions to file...you would be at a loss about Precedence from other Cases....It is HUGELY inadvisable to Represent yourself in any Felony--:tiphat:

learn on your own, and represent yourself

are you supposed to learn beforehand? or does this self education begin upon charges filed against you?

that question being asked, i now laugh at you for sounding like a tool.

keep giving horrible advice, it seems to suit you...

p.s. explosion with 20+ cans of butane in vicinity = bho explosion

I would never advise anyone to represent themselves. I would advise people to learn the law, rules of court, filings of motions, writs etc.

If you don't do that, minimally, you may not deserve freedom. Because freedom is not something that is given freely, it's taken by those who have the will to take and keep it.
