Just to confirm i will be taking the Votes at 20:00 tonight 26/05/11
Hello Auto Forum!

After much snooping around and chatting to Mitch_Conner i've decided i can wait untill next season to give this ago so here i am.

I can only grow in the garden at the moment so these will be grown outside at 52 deg North in the UK.

A bit late in the season to get things going but i think being autos this will play nicely into my hands as the weather is only gonna get better.

I'm looking to finish mid September.

I've brought SGS's AF Mix as i will only run 4 seeds this year and would like some mix.

BUT i need your help on which 4 to pick so i'm gonna try and do a poll and would like as many of you to vote by tonight so i can get them soaked.

I need to move quickly as i'm going on holiday June 16 and would like to get them established quickly.

Can you get a macro of them?

I could probably identify what strains some of them might be after what I have ran recently.. But that might spoil your fun?

Hi Mitch.. i'll get a better photos later of what has been selected, I did this under my desk at work so had to be a bit sneeky about it.

would be good to have an idea what might be growing though, especiallyas i plan on doing some crosses .. i'm sure you'll be able to tell once they they get going.

from what i can see there are three types of seed but i know there are 4-5 strains in there so some might be harder to tell apart.

I've been mucking about with binocular lenses and my Mrs camera and getting some Crazy Macros.. but think she might wonder WTF is going on and need to keep this side project on the down low.. should be able to get some nice shots with my phone though as it's 8.1megapixel.. just needs some bright light.

Edit looks as though the Big Seed # 12 is a favourit.. which is good as i wanted that one too.

ok going for 3 5 8 and 12

Edit: When i took the poll @ 20:00pm GMT it 3, 5, 7 & 8 were joint 2nd place and 12 was in the lead.. I chose to drop No. 7 as i wanted to get a good mix and No. 8 was the only Light green Seed with enough votes.

Can't wait to see what i get in this mix Mwah hahahaha!

The photos are wank.. Need the bigger camera and day light, will photo the other 8 and see if you can tell.. Other than that we'll just have to wait.

sweet! hope they do well for you. You can expect to harvest them sooner then Sept. They are 100% AF and even the most sativa dominant strains in the mix wont take longer then 75 days outdoors. So if you start them now expect harvest around Aug 10-15, at the latest.

Peace SGS

Hey SGS, thanks for stopping by. Didn't get the breeder at Greenhouse pop in when I grew their beans.
All four have been soaking for nearly 12hrs and i've just realised i'v not got any compost other than chunky home made stuff.. A trip to the shops is needed.

no problem bro , I love checking stuff being grown out.

Are you planing to start these outside, or keep them inside then put them out?

AFs work best when started outside and stay outside, make a mini greenhouse out of clear plastic on a simple wood frame or similar, so they can enjoy the outside sun... starting AFs indoors and then to outdoors then to transplant, they can get stunted if you arnt super careful or know what you are doing.

Ask Mitch what soil he uses, you cant go wrong there.

Thanks SGS.. I had read abit about moving them from inside to out, Luckly/Unluckly for me i only have the sun to work with at the moment.

once they have pop thier head up they will go into a Propagator outside which shold see them throgh till one week, Then it's out in the big wild world for them (Waste ground at the end of the garden).

As for poting them on i like to start seeds in 1.5"x1.5" cells them move them after 4-5 days to 1/2 litre pots untill week two and then into 10litre pots and finally 40-50litre growbags.. Stedily increasing the FBB, Will i be ok to finish these in 10litre pots rather than big bags?

As for soil it gonna have to be what ever the supermarket has on the way home.. I think Asda had westlands 3 x 50L for £10.00.. which would be cool as i can use the bags to pot on my Non-AF grow. Once they growing will put them into a mix of:

Compost
Loam Based Compost (John Innes)
Vermicultie
Sand
Fish/Blood/Bone

Thats always done me well in the past.

Eggy mate just my 2p here.

with the short life span of AFs I would rethink your strategy for potting them.

Start them in 2 litre pop bottles - you can by bottled water from tesco for about 12p if you don't have any.

Then at sex pot them up into something like 11 litres or more if you can.

Give them a light soil that isn't too rich in the 2 litres, seedling/cutting soil

Then when they are established they can handle a richer compost.

I am also growing SGS AFmix and i have to say that they are REALLY though ! I have at the moment 10+ other strains and these from SGS are growing faster then the others and are also much bigger. They can take night temps who are down to 3C without any problems or stunted growth they just keep on growing. . . I must say that they are my favorites at the moment, i really mean it. At Mitch Connor do think that 11 L pots will do good for them ? I am growing mine in 6,5 L and i am saving my 12 L for "normal" strains, do you think that 11 L will make a BIG difference compared to 6,5 L ? Anyway GOOD LUCK to ya Big Eggy. . .

Thanks Mitch,

How long till they show sex normally? they've gotta be in the final pots for the 15th June (19day time) as i'm on holiday for a week and need to give them a good drenching. Not too worried about having Males as i would like to grow them out for some pollen chucking.

I've got some nice big 15litre pots (the sort established shrubs come in) i got out of a skip on the new houses over the back of mine.. but the holes in the bottom are really big and i'm a little worried they will be too free draining while i'm away...

Will probably have to pot straight into 0.8Lite pots then in 19days (or sooner root growth depending) straight into final pots.

I like the idea of Pop bottles as this is what i used when i was Micro growing.. but.. it will send alarm bells ringing when the Mrs see's them in the garden. at least in normal pots they kinda blend in with what else i have going.

I say 2 litre bottles as I think its the depth of them - not total volume that they like!

So if you have any regular garden pots with a decent depth that will help you get the most out of them.

You would be really surprised though how quickly they will get a tap root down to the bottom of one!

Indoors they sex for me (fems) at around 14-17 days from sprout. Outdoors *may* take a little longer.

@ chrille - I think 6.5 will be fine, it works for me indoor but 11 litres wouldnt hurt at all, if I was running less plants I would def give them more legroom.

Cheers Mitch,

What i'll do then is get them going in the .8litre pots and then put them in to the pots i'm vegging my normal grow in. They are 11+litres and deeper than a normal pot.. infact they are buckets that cut flowers come in at florist.. A lady round the corner from me sells them for 50p each. i can get 11 litres of dirt in each one with enough space to add another 2litres as a top dressing should it be needed... Plus i can limit drainage whilst i'm away and add more holes when i come back.

DAY 1

DAY 1

All of the four seeds germed.. although the big one took a little longer than the others and has only just put out a tap root.

lloy

wats up man. i been growing autos for 3 years outdoor now and have almost dialed it in. some of the things i have figured out are as evry one recommended they do like deeper pots more than wide, 3 days before transplant i will prep the top inch of soil with alfalfa meal (this has a chemical in it that will keep the transplant shock to a minimum), then i give them a light dose of kelp meal( this is packed with growth regulaters and many other great substances) this will prep them for explosive flowering. when feeding during flowering i will give small amounts of N untill around day 30 this will ensure you will get the largest plant per container size in my opinion( it may increase flower time up to 4-7 days tops but i see this as a benifit as thier life cycle is so short). If you dont want these plants to blatantly obvious for the mrs sake i can recommended 2 things 1 dig holes in the ground that you can put the soda bottles in, so it is beneath ground level and 2 grow a tomato patch and keep them in the midst of it, i have seen friends look at my tomato garden and not see the 3 week old mj plants in it( 6x6 tomato garden ). I can tell you are obviously not new to this but figured i would share what has worked for me with auto's. on another note does the dwarf root stock you were talking about with the apple trees keep the tree size small? if you do end up getting that apple tree will you be grafting any other variety's to it? Good luck with evreything.

Thanks for the advice lloy..

once they are a bit bigger there's no hiding them from the Mrs as she is helping a lot in the garden. But the longer i can aviod an argument the better.

Holiday in 13 days Agghhh hope the weather isn't too hot at home while i'm away.

As for the Dwarfing root stock. M27 rootstock is suitable for a Half Standerd (crown at head hight). as for grafting on it later, the cultivar im looking at "Red Devil" is self fertile so will probably just leave it as is. I think if you phone Ken Muir they will do Family trees of three types of apple "earlys, mids & lates" but would be fun to try and make one myself.

If i get any suckers form the M27 i might try and grow it on for a future grafting project.

Lloy if you want a really dwafing tree i think M9 will keep a tree at about head hight when mature.

Day 7

Day 7

Hello Everyone,

Right just a quick update:

The big seed has gone.. it was slow to germ but was doing ok, But my big clumsy fingers snapped it when i was trying to help the seed case come off. No biggy three plants suits me better really.

So here they are, i have three very different seedlings which is just what i wanted!

Tall Green Seedling
picture.php

Medium Green Seedling
picture.php

Purple Tinted Seedling
picture.php

you cant really see in the picture but the last one has purple hues to the leaves.

I will be repotting them into the final 11litre pots tonight as i dont want to stunt them. I have read a lot about this regarding autos and do have a question. Does the stunting just slow down the flowering time or does it affect the finished product?

Cheers Eggy
