i just got a galaxy s through t mobile......

any cool things i can do?

Tons, check the forums I mentioned earlier. I dont know the Galaxys well enough to say anything about them.

So from the 32 gig preinstalled microsd card only 4 gigs a usable? Why is that?
My 3GS is painfully slow I've recently noticed...

Nah, of the 8 gigs of physical memory on the phone. The 32 gigs is totally accessible.

Thanks for clearing that up, Mclabia.
Ive been reading the xda forums, thanks for the tip. Ive found the Virusrom Airborne but Im having trouble locating the Ziggy 5.3.11 kernel for the Thunderbolt. Was this originally a kernel for a different phone?
Another question that maybe you could answer quickly for me: if i root my phone, does the carrier provide network updates that will reduce functionality unless i keep updating the rom (a la Xbox live does to hacked xboxs)? I would sort of like to not having to stay one step ahead of the posse all the time, so to speak. I guess the answer would be i shouldnt root my phone if i dont want to keep modifying it, since there are always better and faster roms being developed all the time, but i dont want to spend an inordinate amount of time staying on the bleeding edge of rom-tech....

My girl and a homie have a Galaxy S Phone(but both are different) and I rooted my girls phone and the phone didn't no like it. But on the other hand my homie rooted and flashed a rom and gets better battery life and better performance.

The ziggy kernel can be found here
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/htc-thund...471-mecha-beta-kernel-updated-3-may-11-a.html
There was a whole big issue of Ziggy releasing the source code for his kernel and he hosted it on his own page and didnt have to deal with certain restrictions. Theres a thread about it somewhere. lol.

When you root your phone and install a custom rom, the rom makers disable the ability to do OTAs(Over the Air updates). If you do these updates its warned that you MAY lose root for good. There are always updates to radios and the stock rom on the forums though.

Thanks again for the help, McLabia. Sorry about the Sharks.
I can get onto a group plan on Sprint that will save me a bunch of money so i think i might go with the evo 3d when it comes out. I know theyll never unlock the bootloader because its encrypted but if they can find a workaround for root access so i can get free wireless tethering I'm good with that...

The Bolt had a locked/signed bootloader and it was rooted within two days. lol. Thats a nonissue as far as I can tell.

Hope can be a dangerous thing, but i thank you nonetheless...
:thank you:

That's just the nature of telling people "no, you can't do this cause we said so" just like with cannabis.

I'll get on a preorder list at a sprint store for the evo 3d. I know Verizon's network, especially their LTE 4G, is superior; the data speeds in particular are 2-4x what Sprint's capable of. But getting on a group plan would probably make my phone bill 40% less than if i signed a comparable plan with Verizon.
Nice thing is that if i dont like the evo 3d or it isnt hacked within a month, i can return it for a full refund. Rumor has it the Samsung Galaxy S II is going to be avail for Sprint when it comes out...

You can do family plans on Verizon too and I think they're a little cheaper, but sprints 3g coverage I think is a little better, but nothing beats Verizon lte service.

Indeed. I would think the VZ LTE service is so fast that with wireless tethering you could easily replace whatever broadband service you have at home. Except for the fact that you lose it when you leave home, unless you leave your phone behind, which would defeat the purpose i guess...

Comcast is also in Chicago. They just rolled out a 105mbps service called Extreme 105 that costs like $200 a month in a bundle package. Would be even better if it didnt have a monthly bandwidth cap, but for right now thats gotta be the fastest residential ISP offered...
