What's new

Hey dude, what's wrong with my plant?

I just recently read "Orange Sunshine". It's an interesting read

Interesting - which book did you read? Nicks?

The movie is what has my interest - the producer is a son of one of the 13 founding members of the BOEL. It's said that he was given access to a number of documents and journals from the guys who were really there.

It's been in post-production for over 2 years. Twists and turns as the story unfolds.

Timothy Leary f*cked the whole thing up. "Timothy Leary" & "Mystic Arts World" are good search terms to start.

And the usual BOEL associates...........

An uncracked mind is a horrible thing, so glad something cracked yours. So many people refuse to let anything in, and it's so sad.

fear not, i am a fierce intelligent radical Sagittarius. i was born into post modernity. my mind does not deal in dichotomies. truth is vague and fluid, and inexorably attached to context and perspective.

Yep it was Nick's book. Yes the movie should be amazing, hopefully. Have you read Nick's book?
Don't even wanna get started with Timothy Leary :moon:

I'm "friends" with a few members of the BEL so I'm sure I could get at least part of the stories.

On another note, since I know you LOVE High Times, they are inducting Farmer John into the counter culture hall of fame or something like that.

Have you come to the part about the night that Leary was taken down by the F.B.I. (pre D.E.A. days) in 'the Canyon' and the number of people in the street clapping and thanking the LEO for taking this pariah out of Laguna?

I was one of those cheering the deal - seriously. What an asshole.

Yeah, I finished the book, but might read it again. It reads really easy, and it's very interesting.

And yeah I've heard from a few people that met/knew TL and they said pretty much the same thing, biggest asshole ever.

In a 6 month time frame John Griggs died from an overdose of Psilocybin out at the ranch out off Ortaga Highway, then there was Woodstock and finally Altamont.

The party was over - but because this was before cell phones no one called in the end to the revolution.

Weird times.

From the sounds of it, you knew quite a few of the BEL (BOEL does it matter? I've always seen BEL) or were possible affiliated. Not that it matters, just seems like you have a lot of info about it. If you ever feel like talking about it, I would love to hear more from a different perspective.

I tried telling someone about how the BEL was responsible for the vast majority of land race genetics in our country and it was funny cuz he told me I was wrong, but he had never even heard of BEL. Kids today have no sense of history!

Pretty simple actually. The original '13 members' consisted of John Griggs and his gang of he and 6 members (bikers from a sh*tty bar up in Anaheim near Disneyland - quite appropriate as things turned out).

The other 6 members were a group of drunk, stoned surfers from Newport Beach Peninsula. Party on Wayne!

Quite a mix, eh? The surfers provided a certain level of 'cover' for checking out cannabis from far off places in that every surfer knows how to repair their board with 'Part A' and 'Part B' (fiberglass) and you carry that everywhere you go surfing. Basic sh*t.

The ability to cut open a surfboard and hide small amounts of bud was important to the bikers back in Laguna Beach. By bringing in these samples they could determine the marketability of this or that source. Econ 101

Then someone went to Afghanistan and by the time that party was over there was a path of destruction and despair lined with cocaine, China White, cars, women and general stupidity.

Too much funny money earned without effort in a time that was silly and stupid. It was a good thing that it ended.

Especially after Nick Sand got control of the Orange Sunshine deal - pure crap, i.e. ALD-52 laced with methedrine and God knows what else.

A far cry from LSD-25 and the early days of Bear and the original group 'back in the Canyon' as the expression went. I lived on Canyon Acres for 2 years before the DOD grabbed me kicking and screaming ("Take the women and children FIRST!!!!") and put me into Basic Combat Training - a dismal experience for both of us.

Something like that...........

Yeah I've heard some stories about Afghanistan and those exploits, as well as some of the Mexico trips. The story of the Aafie is kinda like Gilligans Island on acid.

I know some guys on the 'other side' of the BOEL-Afghan deal, i.e. Europeans who arrived in Afghanistan a few months before the clowns from Laguna Beach and had already made deals with some of the war lords involved in hashish. Their view of the BOEL was one of utter disdain and disgust. Worthless assholes - which many of the operatives were.

Bottom line is that for all their false bravado the BOEL was dealing with Europeans in their negotiations with the tribes controlling the deal. That ended because the BOEL soon began making stupid money - remember this is several years before the DEA and the FBI wanted little to do with drug trafficking because in spite of the piece of sh*t that J. Edgar Hoover was he was also a pragmatist about the fact that everyone has a price.

And 'price' isn't always about money. It could be the 'health and welfare' of one's family. It could be about revealing one's sexual peccadillos (Hoover certainly knew a lot about that paradigm). There are a number of ways to 'make things work out' if you have the money and the secrets of those you want to influence.

By the time the DEA had been established and was up and running the BOEL was long gone - cocaine and greed.

As you read through Schou's articles, interviews and book and balance that against the movie "Orange Sunshine" try and keep an open mind.

And in the words of Kahlil Gibran - Say not, "I have found the path of the soul." Say rather, "I have found the soul walking upon my path"

Kinda works on a number of levels in life perhaps.

I try to keep an open mind in everything I do. The only thing I know for sure, is that there will always be someone that knows more.

Speaking of books of time gone, anybody read 'The Monkey Wrench Gang' ?
George Hayduke is coming to the silver screen in 2013. That's the promise anyway.

Some of R. Crumb's best illustration work is in the 1985 edition (10th Anniversary).
