Rolling hitch for hanging lights?

I'm just wondering if any of you trust the rolling hitch or a double rolling hitch to hang your lights. 90 lb rope is cheap and a rolling hitch seems like it would be a great idea for and adjustable light hangar.

A rolling hitch is not intended for a load that pulls at 90 degrees. Look up animated knots by Grog, a cool website.

Chains and S hooks can be had for pocket change at any hardware/home supply.

i'm not sure how you are imagining the use of this knot but I am using a rope looped over a 2x3 and then through the hook on the light. There is no 90 involved. I just pick up on the light slide the knot and thats it. It seems so perfect I'm a little shocked they actually sell special hangers.

I might have gone for chain and s hooks if I hadn't already spent my pocket change on the lights and ballasts and fans etc etc etc.

well, if you already seem to think it is a perfect idea, why ask anyones opinion?

Because "seems to be" and "is" are different. I was just hoping to find someone who had/does use the rolling hitch to hang their lights. I guess that wasn't quite clear in the opening post.

I assumed that in asking for those who trust it, I would have information from someone who had learned through practical application . I wanted more than opinion. Sorry.:tiphat:

Chain is so positive I cant imagine using anything else. Whenever I'm out of town I would worry that my house might be burning down if I had rope holding my lights.

I bought ratcheting rope tie-downs for my lights. I don't have a grow right now but the bigger, 150lb rated ones work great on my truck. Not cheap if you have a bunch of lights, though. I've read of people dropping lights on their plants when using chain and the ratcheting rope pulley system would avoid that (with any luck).

Hey, thanks for all your great input here. :moon:

No offense but Lean Green parroted a website, I mean verbatim. He didn't understand what I was talking about and used a search engine. Granted, that was cool of him to do and I appreciate his input and effort. I used search engines online and searched Icmag before posting.

Freezerboy, again, no offense meant, commented on the usefulness of chain. I appreciate his input but it really doesn't give me any kind of educated opinion on the use of a rolling knot to hang lights.

You, however, have really just made comments that don't contribute a god damned thing and quite frankly...nevermind. I've got 35 posts and am already dealing with this kind of bullshit?

Oh, and thank you LeeROI!

I use a chain that is usually overkill for hanging my lights. Better safe than sorry. Also make sure it's mounted on a stud. I usually use a 2 x4 and then attach my hooks to that.

As for S-Hooks. I don't use them anymore, unless it's on something random and it's a big hook. I instead use Quick Links These are much more secure than s-hooks.

I had a light fall on top of my trellis, while I was out of town. Luckily my friend came by, saw it, and fixed it. Never used an s-hook again. If you can't afford the right chains, mounting, and Quick Link. Don't hang your lights.

Below are links to the Quick Links and Chain as examples. I check the load limit. Someone might have better advice.

Why use something flammable to support an electrical device that will potentially be hanging over lots of beautiful plants? Just doesn't make sense to me.

If you do use rope, just make sure your fire insurance is in place and there aren't kids or pets in the house.

The ratcheting tie downs are a great idea. I was walking my dog today with a retractable leash and that got me thinking along alternative lines for hangers. Dropping lights on my plants is my biggest concern. I'll use a backup no matter what I choose to use so that the distance the light can fall in an "oops" limits plant damage and eliminates any chance of the light hitting the floor.

I know that there are many many growers out there who have dropped mad cash on rooms and equipment. So far I've spent about 1300 and could have been much smarter with how I spent it. My budget for the grow is spent (other than ongoing expenses like electricity) and though I have the bulk of my growroom completed, the little bits (starter colars, adjustable elbows, rekeying my doors to eliminate landlord surprises, locking knob for the grow room door, insulation, vent pipe, tarp zippers, tape of various kinds (electrical, mastic, duct, breakers, wire, recepticles) drop cloths, etc. ) are adding up. I'm trying to save any way I can without making stupid comprimises. I've had a difficult time condensing the huge amount of information and opinion into practical knowledge.

I watched Jorge Cervantes ultimate grow video and I'm chuckling in retrospect at his build a grow room segment. I'm glad I was naive to what it would actually require or I could never have sold myself or my wife on the idea.

Cool. Thanks for the apology. It means a lot. :comfort:

I wish there was a way to ensure light position, short of building a rigid frame. Something cheap I could hang from the ceiling, maybe. I know a lot of people grow in cabinets but for everyone else, getting the light STRAIGHT and LEVEL can be a real bitch. It is for me. Jerry rigging with string and cord everywhere is getting old.

I live and die by chain. This is the kind I use:

picture.php

A pair of needle nose pliers and channel-locks are all that's needed to bend the links. I used yo-yo's before but always ran into the problem of them not going high enough. Chain is more versatile. If I had to upgrade to anything I would use chain or cables on pulleys. That's a long way off though.

bah humbug, I have used rope on tons of hoods.

I tie the rope to the hanger on the hood, run it through an eyelet that is mounted to a stud, then tie it off to a cleat. I can raise and lower my lights very easily.

You could always use chains for safety in case the rope breaks
