Impressed with the 600watt

I recently bought a 600watt HPS to help transition clones to a 1000K without burning them. I was impressed with how cool it was compared to a 1000K therefore able to move it closer to the canopy. When comparing the two bulbs on the lumen charts we've all seen; the plants were receiving more lumens with the 600watt because I was able to move it closer.

I'm I crazy to think I could do better with a 600watt ballast and bulb?

Someone who thinks like I do.... I'm also growing a small forest SOG and don't need the light penetration. I've been training the plants and have tied down all the top colas to help create an even canopy. The girls like being tied down and have taken off since then !

 I bet that 1,000,000 watt bulb is HOT. :toohot:

yeah it's known that the 600 watt lights are over all more cost effective efficient, you get more lumen per watt too. unless growing trees there is no need for 1k lights to flower.

Even with five foot plants I can do well with a 600 watt lamp and electronic ballast per 20 square feet. Lollipop the girls. Keep all shade leaves trimmed the last four weeks. Rotate the plants once a week and turn them a quarter turn daily. The money saved in electricity and cooling equipment brings my cost down to about $23 a oz. Comparable to prices four decades ago.

That's my man, G-Man...cannot agree with you more.
In my indoor bible Jorge says that the 600 is one of man's greatest inventions. Two of them put side by side is still more lumens and less (or at least) equal electricity then one 1k light. I swear by them...wish I had more 6's instead of the 1k's i have. Would much rather replace the 1k's with 2 6's any-day.

Does anyone have any experience with a 'Flipbox' within the same room? Someone told me I could double my SQ ft with one ballast and switch in between them every 60-90min.

You can do this but it ultimately will reduce your watts per square foot. This may be a good thing if you are way above the recommended 50 watts per square foot or a bad thing if you are at or below it. It is essentially the same as a mechanical light mover. Some growers will call it an electronic light mover. As long as you maintain your 50w per square foot at any given moment you can move the light around for better coverage.

go check out Heath Robinson's thread where he had (5) 600w in an X and the center 600w stayed on and only 2 of the corner 600's on at a time, 1800 watts on total.
