haha, i feel like i am the only one participating in this thread anymore. oh well!

i have just boxed the blockbuster back up. it is too big for the dr90 and to be able to run duct work for it. i am going back to get the supersun 4inch side vented hood.

i am excited becuase it will make for a more efficient and clean tent. also, the vents are sort of angles upwards which will help with venting etc etc. also, went i flip to 12/12 i will attach the 4x12 phresh and have the vortex pulling the filter and the hood.

is it best to mount the fan on the outside of the inside? pros and cons to both?

You are working on the same setup i may be getting soon.. and there is another nice reflector made by cap called a lumesun. the new dr look like they have the same canvas. i just hook up duct and set my fan on top>reflector>filter.

The only last-ditch effort I could recommend to save that hood would be to turn it diagonally so you'd have a little bit more room on either end with the ducts. If it's not a problem to return/exchange it then it's probably better to just do that.

Mounting on the inside would give you a little bit of noise reduction, less heat absorbed by the fan itself, and easier mounting since you can just hang it. Putting it outside would give you more room inside, and considering the size of that (or a different) hood, and the fact that you also need a filter in there, I think that's a good idea. My opinion is that more noise comes from the duct work immediately before and after the fan then the fan casing itself. If you're insulating or otherwise somehow covering the ductwork around it you'll have a reduction in noise. The tent walls are not very good at dampening or absorbing sound. I say go for outside. You need room inside for things that absolutely must be inside.

I think they have improved the super sun with the air-cooled vents along the length of the hood.
The reflective pebbling goes thru-out the reflector versus it just being on the top in the earlier models.
They also have the super sun 2 with the air-cooling vents at the ends.
It was initially only in a 6" but now I see they have a 4" option.
I would stick with the one you are thinking of with the vents along the side, though you have ample space in your tent if you want to do the super sun 2.
Both are great reflectors and will be just fine for the 3x3 space.
I would suggest keeping your extractor fan where it is (maybe horizontal) and just adjusting the height of the hood as needed.
I would vent out of the tent, pushing thru a phresh or can filter (you will need to reposition the pre-filter).
I would suggest getting a piece of sheetrock that is 37"X37" and placing that outside, on-top of the tent with a ducting hole drilled thru so you can use the outside top of the tent to rest your ballast, filter and blumat reservoir on.
Since you are just in the planning stage you should give vertical a once-over and determine if that is something you would like to do.
